luigi bertolotti Posted January 14, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M8 does show a little annoying issue : if you focus a lens form infinity to nearer distances, the VF cam does not move... it seems "blocked" to infinity : - without lens - moved by finger, all ok - if you mount a lens not focused at infinty, it regularly moves - align, but when you reach infinity, doesn't come back... - so, apparently, the cam's arm seems to have unsufficient "force" (iirc it has a spring mechanism) to "follow" the lens cam when it moves from inner position. Apparently, no dust - dirt next to Only detail on usage : today it has been for several hours in very cold environment (as other times); I didn't tke note when the problem has born... not during those hours, anyway... it worked fine as usual, realized it at home.... I don't remember to have read of such an issue in the forum...
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Hi luigi bertolotti, Take a look here Problem on viewfinder cam. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted January 14, 2012 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2012 Do you have a Summicron-C 40/2? If so it could be interesting to ckeck out how the roller behaves on a sloping cam. Just curious as i have no explanation so far.

jaapv Posted January 15, 2012 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2012 Isn't there just a piece of fluff caught in the mechanism?
lct Posted January 15, 2012 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2012 Perhaps your roller cam wobbles a bit too much and touches the flange ou your lenses when the focus cam goes down. Does it behave the same with lenses like the last Elmar 50/2.8 where the focus cam is less close to the flange than others? Another 0 cent idea i'm afraid... luigi bertolotti Posted January 15, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted January 15, 2012 Apparently there is NOTHING around or in contact with the mechanism....... I inspected with a light, sprayed air around... the problem arises with any lens with different cams (to say, Elmarit 24 and Cron 90 / TE 135...the arm has a little screw which I don't like to touch... well... not so worried, is clear that is something "little and stupid" and there is a good lab in my town... Another 0 cent idea i'm afraid... not so crazy, I still wonder if that was my problem with a 90/2.8 ... there is all of the sudden no friction when you turn the ring and the viewfinder is frozen. I will be interested to hear what the problem was.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 21, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted January 21, 2012 Problem solved - 50 Euros at a lab - arm removed and remounted : they told me that, maybe for cold, there was an anomal friction they fixed with a bit of proper lubricant... pgk Posted January 21, 2012 Share #10 Posted January 21, 2012 I was going to suggest that it sounded like a contraction problem. Back in the late seventies I used to use my father's Leica IIIB and found that when using it in really cold winter weather the aperture on the 50mm Elmar used to become far harder to adjust - i always thought that it was simply contraction of the brass lever but from your above post it sound like it probably needed new lubricant too.
