Keith (M) Posted December 28, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted December 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The postman brought a bayonet adaptor this morning so I just had to try out my recently acquired Elmar 90mm f4 (#1482xxx) which had been primarily bought for use on my IIIg, on my M9. Prior to this, the longest lens I had with bayonet mount was a Summarit 75mm and I was concerned that focussing the 90mm on an M might be a problem, as I have read various threads about difficulties that people have had. Somewhat to my surprise, I do not find any problem with matching the split image, even on relatively low-contrast subjects. One clear advantage of this lens IMHO is the long focus 'throw'. I made a couple of quick tests, one subject at minimum distance, the second at infinity. Ignoring the vignette in image 1 (SilverEfex Pro 2), I note that at infinity and against a blue sky there is a hint of vignetting (which would be easily fixed) but I wonder what the 'best' setting on the M9 would be? At the moment I have selected "90 f4 11633/11634". Â Based on today's results, it just might be a while before the 90mm makes it back to the IIIg... luigi bertolotti Posted December 28, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted December 28, 2011 Imho, the 2nd picture, at infinity, displays a noticeable LACK of vignetting.... the bottom corners are perfect... and a blue sky - non-uniform while going upward, is someway not a rigorous proof : try a white paper with uniform lighting... I'd bet that real vignetting is very very low (and I, personally, doubt that a different setting can change it). Elmars 90 are pleasant small and nice old lenses... you made a fine buy . lct Posted December 28, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted December 28, 2011 No M9 experience sorry. On the M8.2, my uncoded collapsible Elmar 90/4 (11631) vignettes more than my coded Elmar-M 90/4 macro (11633) which is hardly surprising. I would code the former like the latter as well.
