Summicron 50

I have just confirmed purchase of a used 50mm Summicron serial number 3448521. I understand this is version 4,1979 -1994 but not the latest which has a built in hood. I was told the year of manufacture was 1988. For those of you who know, could you please confirm that this is indeed version 4 that bears the same optical formula as the current lens with built in hood and coding.

It has a focus tab and bears the word Leitz in the front of the lens. It comes with a lens hood that is marked "Summaron 3.5cm and Summicron 5cm". I am not sure if this is the original hood for this lens? However, regardless, I find the lens hood rather large and cumbersome and plan not use it. The lens cab seems a bit loose and may drop off quite easily.

I would like to get a new lens cap for this lens and use it without the hood unless absolutely necessary. Please advise link to a seller if you are know of one. Any suggestions or advice are most welcome.

Incidentally, I like the M8.2 (intuitive handling and a joy to use) much more than the 5D as well as the R7. I already have the 28mm Elmarit ASPH; together with the 50mm, this should make a nice combo for my two-lens outfit.

Yours seems to be a type 5, 4th optical version, # 11819 Summicron-M 50/2 (1979-1994).

The regular hoods for it are metal 12585 or plastic 12538 vented hoods. Both can be reversed on the lens and provide a good protection.

The lens cap is 14268 or 14285 and the hood cap 14033.

Hello Edwin,

Welcome to the Forum.

The primary purpose of a rigid lens hood is to protect the lens from inadvertant &/or unexpected impact &/or damage. Its other purpose, proper flare suppression, is the reason for the size & shape. Both are important. The ITDOO lens hood you have is an earlier version of what later came w/ your lens. Both work well.

Best Regards,

Michael

I owned that lens and found that it needed all the protection against flare and reflections that it could get. So use the hood you have. When storing the lens, reverse the hood on it and put on the funny little plastic end cap that has notches for the hood's finger snaps.

If this one has been lost, a regular 39mm front cap (which of course fits the lense's filter thread, as the lens uses E39 filters) does actually fit the reversed hood!

In 2004 I replaced this lens with a Summilux ASPH. A quick look at what Sweden looks like at this time of the year would make you understand that because of the speed alone, but actually the Summiluxe's freedom of flare effects had much to do with the decision. Still, that old Summicron is a good lens – it is still made in the original optical form, though with a revamped mount – as long as you are aware of the one weakness of it. With a M9, you casn at least check what you got (is that a heretical thought in this venue?)

Thank you all for your comments and advice. For information I have declined to proceed with the purchase as the condition of the lens is quite "beat up". The aperture ring shifts beyond the f/2 mark quite significantly. It will be hard to sell it in the future when I choose to upgrade.

I shall wait a while and continue to search for a better one. While testing the lens, I've grown to like this version with the focus tab which helps to "feel" at which end of the focus scale I am at. It sure speeds up focusing.

I am new in this forum and I am wondering why my thread was moved. Did I do something wrong? I am learning and any advice is most appreciated. Trying to be a "good citizen" in the forum. I must add that I have learned heaps here.

Recent history for a lens discontinued in 1994 indeed.

Mods, will we have to come on this historical forum each time we discuss Mandler lenses, Leica M6 or R gear as in the current Customer forum?

If so the latter will loose a lot of life i suspect.

We have been moved twice actually. First to the Historical forum and now to the Customer forum again.

Well thank goodness for that, that's one way of confusing us isn't it ?? Presumably we shall now stay here ??

Its nice to know what happened. Now lets get back to the thread. It might throw some light on a problem I'm having with my M6.

Best wishes.
