ryee3 Posted December 5, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I attach the 1.4x apo extender on my 105- 280 mm zoom lens the spit image quality through the viewfinder is diminished as compared to the split image when not using the extender. Any suggestion on what to do to make the focusing any easier? I am using the Canon Mark iv body with a Leica to EOS body adapter at full aperture and a split image viewfinder screen. The Apo-Extender 1.4x reduces the lens speed by one stop which darkens split image focus screens accordingly. There's nothing you can do against this but to center your eye in the viewfinder or to try another focus screen i'm afraid. Some Katz Eye focus screens are said to remain useful above f/8 but i have no experience with them.
jaapv Posted December 5, 2011 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2011 I focus that combo far better with a full matte screen. Yes, it will be at the limit of split-image focussing.
stuny Posted December 5, 2011 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2011 Repositioning your eye at the viewfinder (move it around) will brighten both sides fothe split image.

Jaapv You made the above comment in an earlier post. Is a full matte screen you mentioned the same as a uniform ground glass screen ie Leica 14344? LeicaPassion Posted September 13, 2012 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2012 Jaap is correct. In my R days, I used the full matte screen with the 1.4 app extender. It worked perfectly. I used a Beattie screen, which is brighter. I'm not sure if they are still available.
Rick Posted September 13, 2012 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have Ef-A Standard Laser Matte focusing screen (matte) in a 5D and it works well with the 1.4x up to about f8 in good light with a 280mm lens. It probably goes without saying that you need to adjust the diopter in the eyepiece perfectly. Also, you are probably aware that Canon makes several different screens. Here is a link to their screens: http://learn.usa.canon.com/app/pdfs/quickguides/CDLC_FocusingScreens_QuickGuide.pdf
