Who has experience with Paypal? I never used it for selling, but now some are requesting it.

What if I deliver the M9 and the buyer retransfers his money back? It is possible, right? Then I have no camera and no money?!?

Could someone explain the risks of shipping an item and get paid via Paypal?

Thanks a lot!

Neverever send an item that has been payed via PayPal without tracking. If the buyer claims that he has not received the article and you are unable to proof it, you will loose your money. I do accept PayPal payments only from reputable buyers.

If you are unfamiliar with Paypal and have not used it to receive payments then I would personally recommend against using it for selling an M9. As Ulrik says you need tracking but I would also caution that other disputes (such as a buyer claiming that there was damage or it was not as described) may be problematic, or at the least very worrying, if a dispute was to be raised. For an M9 sale I'd try to use other payment methods.

I have used Pay Pal many times even when receiving payment for very expensive items and I have never had any problems. However, as is pointed out by others it is vital that you use a shipping service with a tracking system and you obtain proof of delivery. In this respect, the seller carries all the risk.

Buyers of course feel safe for this reason, and some buyers walk away if Pay Pal is not an option. If you sell on eBay.com Pay Pal is required as a means of payment. I believe that on other sites such as eBay.de you can demand payment by transfer.

For en expensive item like the M9 fees will be high as well, and you could volunteer to pass these on to the buyer if other means of payment is selected.

Is this a common issue ? I am considering selling my M8... now I am too worried to consider Paypal,,,

Most people are honest, of course.

Selling through the forum benefits the forum, but you need to take all the usual precautions when buying and selling from anyone.

Delivery proof is fine, the problem arises when the buyer claims "not as described", keeps the item and returns a brick in a box.

That's one of the things i'm afraid of too.

But is it possible that the buyer receives the camera and then claims his money back via his credit card/paypal (and keeps the camera)?

Having all the troubles in mind that could arise by selling the camera and receiving paypal payments, means that the only way to be safe is to sell it back to the dealer and lose a lot of money... :(

You can always sell it THROUGH a dealer, and pay him commission. That's what I did when I sold my DMR a few years ago.

It's a lot less worrying than through eBay.

On the other hand PayPal is a great incentive to help buyers who are nervous about unscrupulous sellers, taking the worry away that they will be ripped off and get no camera at all never mind one that doesn't work or is in a poorer condition than described. This works both ways, its not just buyers who are villians.

There are obviously the usual precautions to take, but it is worth remembering that the small number of horror stories get plastered all over the internet while the vast majority of trades go through without any hitches and don't get mentioned. If you put a camera on Ebay and say payment is by bank transfer only it will ring alarm bells, if you say payment is only by PayPal more people will bid and the price will be higher.

I would only accept established forum members as buyers through PayPal, unknowns may well pay with other means.

It may be of interst to LUF members that NikonCafe have a policy on its own For Sale section that only members with minimum 300 posts can trade (used to be less).

This is copied from NikonCafe

- Eligibility. Members must have made at least 300 posts and been a member here for at least 180 days. This is an automatic part of the Nikon Cafe software; when eligibility has been met the member will automatically be given access to the For Sale forum. Repetitive, brief phrases or remarks do not necessarily count towards that total.

NO EXCEPTIONS.

Few pointers on PayPal from NC

Paypal Info

Fact #1

It is against PayPal policy for the seller to list PayPal fees as an additional cost to the sale price. Seller's price should include the percentage charged by PayPal.

Fact #2

If you are reported to PayPal, the penalty is loss of your PayPal account.

Fact #3

Adding the PayPal fee voids the Seller's Protection

Fact #4

Using PayPal Gifts voids the Seller's/Buyer's Protection

There is no obligation to accept Paypal and, in my experience, not doing so doesn't greatly hinder being able to sell even expensive items like Leica lenses and bodies. I don't accept Paypal for anything worth more than a few hundred pounds and always insist on bank transfer for higher value items. I have never had a problem selling such items via the classifieds here and on other forums.

Paypal is an obligation through ebay however! Although you can always state that you prefer payment by bank transfer etc.

Sometimes ebay will hold funds pending the buyers acknowledgment of receipt of the goods, quite likely if you are a new paypal seller.

There is the risk of a chargeback if the buyer claims that the goods were not received, or not as described, and you then get into a 'case resolution' with paypal. As a seller you have some protection also.

I bought some expensive tickets off a seller on ebay this year, which never arrived. I bought them several months in advance of them actually being issued and I was very glad to have paid by paypal as they gave me a full refund (it seems the seller had disappeared, although they had previously good feedback).

Paypal offers the buyer, and seller, some protection, but you do need to be aware of the potential risks, and bear in mind that they are risks associated with people setting out to commit fraud.

My advice is to always be comfortable with the buyer/seller. Get their name, address and phone numbers. Check the details (are they on the telephone directory/electoral roll or similar). Make contact by phone.

There are other alternatives, ESCROW services (although I've not used any myself).

Even bank transfer payments and cheques aren't fail safe. Foreign cheques can 'bounce' several months after the money has been credited to your account and the bank will take it back out, as well as costs! They credit the funds after a few days but may not actually process the cheque for weeks.

For larger sales I would allow several days after receiving a payment by paypal or bank transfer before sending goods out, in case of fraudulent accounts, and don't accept foreign cheques.

I've been buying and selling via ebay and paypal for years and only ever had a couple of problems. The vast majority of people are honest, but the chance of being cheated by a fraudster increases with the value of the item you're selling!

I have also sold quite a bit through Ebay/PayPal. But I would not sell an item of the M9's value using it. Chances are you would not have problems, but I'd still feel uneasy for all the reasons mentioned above. Though I don't have personal experience with grievance processing through PayPal, my understanding is that it's not very productive.

I'd probably first try craigslist, meet in person in a public place, and accept cash only. Or I would use LUF.

I have also sold quite a bit on Amazon. They take a larger cut of the sale price, but sale prices are higher in my experience. I think many people are willing to pay more to avoid an auction purchase.

Yes, and that's why I no longer sell anything worth more than a few hundred quid via eBay. Their loss frankly.

Yes, that is true about cheques but what has that got to do with bank transfer payments? The latter option is very safe. There is a brief period (usually up to 9am on the value date) during which the payment can be reversed but once the payment is in your account it stays there.

And yet bank transfer is the prime method of payment for sales scams, no credit card is involved so no insurance either.

I have always found Ebay/Paypal a great combination for higher priced items as with the usual checks I think people are on the whole civilised and honest. I would have thought people lose more money being short changed in shops in their lifetime than what they would loose to Ebay cheats.
