Advertisement Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Hi satureyes, Take a look here Have I got a unique lens copy? A collectors item?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Viv Posted September 23, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2011 If your lens is just a copy and not a real Leica lens, you have been swindled.
mmradman Posted September 23, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2011 Oh no, not another lens lettering thread. Regrettably not unique problem. There was a thread discussing similar smeared letting only on front rim several weeks ago. Discussion got overheated at times, hoping to see swift response and end of discussion this time. andybarton Posted September 23, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 23, 2011 There are no fake Leica lenses, so that isn't an issue. Return it to your dealer for a replacement.

-Lss- Posted September 23, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does that thing say 'leet'? I think this must be a special edition Leica lens intended for the Internet generation. See: Leet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
aesop Posted September 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 23, 2011 ...apologies for my ignorance, but is this a discussion about the smudged letter "f" in the word "feet" on the lens barrel?
satureyes Posted September 23, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted September 23, 2011 Gees- didnt want to start a massive thread. Just asking- do I really need to replace it? I'm not that anal that I would send a hard to find Leica lens back because of lettering paint. I was just asking..no need to be so rude!

Given the price you must have paid for it you are legitimately entitled to demand that the product is perfect! If you don't, these problems will become recurrent because they won't have any reason to improve their service.
wizard Posted September 23, 2011 Share #13 Posted September 23, 2011 Check if the 'f' in 'feet' is correctly engraved. If yes, then I would simply try to scrape off the excessive paint with my fingernails. That's all it takes to arrive at a perfect lens. If, however, the 'f' is not correctly engraved (just a hole instead of the f, for example), then I would return the lens. Andy
philipus Posted September 23, 2011 Share #14 Posted September 23, 2011 Hmm, could it be that Leica is acknowledging its elite standing? Leet

See above, looks like the latter, which I have seen in prototype lenses. But this is no prototype. Cheers.
kokoshawnuff Posted September 23, 2011 Share #17 Posted September 23, 2011 If you don't care about the bad paint-job then no need to return the lens, but if you consider reselling it one day it could decrease the resale value (though probably not by much)
Ronan Posted September 23, 2011 Share #18 Posted September 23, 2011 Get it clean/fix by your dealer/Leica. If you ever want to resell the lens, the buyer will nitpick and get a couple hundred off the price.

IkarusJohn Posted September 23, 2011 Share #20 Posted September 23, 2011 I'll resist ironic and/or sarcastic responses, and suggest four options: (1) contact Leica and insist on a new replacement. To my mind, you can insist on keeping the lens to use until the replacement is available (2) just send the lens back and insist on prompt turn around (3) notify Leica to get the defect on the record, but then just wait till it's convenient for you - you're near Solms, New Jersey or you're sending gear in for some other reason (4) live with it, and get a refund of part of the price Frankly, it's just sloppy, and there's no reason to try to justify it. It is not the end of the world, it has no impact on anything, other than being annoying, but Leica should not get away with this sort of thing. They should be embarrassed, and they should put themselves out to rectify it. Were it me, I'd probably tell Leica, then do nothing till I could drop by Solms and get them to sort it, face to face. I don't think I'd bother posting here. It's just something that happens - not the crime of the century. Cheers John
