A miller Posted January 5, 2015 Share #570 Posted January 5, 2015 (edited) Bevis Marks' synagoge in London. Couldn't be in USA, because of the date A very coincedence, was in London last week! You got it! I knew full well that as long as one could detect that this could be a synagogue, a simple "1701 and synagogue" search on Google would immediately bring it up. But what the heck, I liked the photo! The Bevis Marks synagogue is the oldest Spanish-Portugese synagogue outside of Amsterdam and was the community synagogue of Sir Moses Montifiore, who at one point was one of London's most prominent businessmen (and also was London's Sheriff at one point). The 1701 Restaurant is on premises and is the highest end (and most expensive) Kosher restaurant in London, FWIW. Your turn! AndreasAM Posted January 5, 2015 Share #571 Posted January 5, 2015 I confess, after Amsterdam, London was second guess and checked it. Wasn't all guesswork though, did restore a lot of monuments in Amsterdam, so the style of windows and brickwork gave Europe away. Will be back in a second with a new challenge! A miller Posted January 5, 2015 Share #572 Posted January 5, 2015 Wasn't all guesswork though, did restore a lot of monuments in Amsterdam, so the style of windows and brickwork gave Europe away.! Fascinating. I'm sure the Bevis Marks in London was modelled after the one in Amsterdam, so that makes a lot of sense.
AndreasAM Posted January 5, 2015 Share #573 Posted January 5, 2015 Quite possible, but I am not that good in the history of both buildings. Will have look at it in my library. But here we go! Different times and different styles Shouldn't be that difficult..... Welcome, dear visitor! AndreasAM Posted January 5, 2015 Share #574 Posted January 5, 2015 In the meantime, did some "research". "The structure of the Bevis Marks' was completed and dedicated in September 1701, designed by Joseph Avis, a quaker. The interior decor and furnishing and layout of the synagogue reflect the influence of the great Amsterdam Synagogue of 1677" So you are right with your assumption!

AndreasAM Posted January 6, 2015 Share #578 Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) Right you are One of the most important buildings in a inner city and a huge influence on the work of most architects, including me. Had to use a more unnoted picture, otherwise it would have been to easy. Here are two better photo's, which I took when I visited the building two years ago. It is up to you, for the next guess!
