Michael Geschlecht Posted June 29, 2016 Share #1411 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) Hello Brian, Actually, across the water was my next guess. Somewhere on Guernsey or possibly somewhere more to the West of there? I wonder where all of the other players are? dem331 Posted June 29, 2016 Share #1413 Posted June 29, 2016 Nice find indeed. I have been to that building a number of times for work reasons, below is a picture I took on a recent visit, but I had never seen that curious structure. I thought it was some kind of watch tower! By the way, anyone know why I have a purple patch in the middle of the picture? I had never noticed before. (M240 probably with 28mm f2 Asph) Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted June 29, 2016 Share #1414 Posted June 29, 2016 Google "28mm Summicron hotspot" and you will find many references to that effect. My own theory is that it is primarily due to the strongly-concave next-to-last lens element acting as a mirror lens. I.E. a type of flare specific to photographing on a mirror-like digital sensor, as opposed to relatively dull matte film. Light passes through lens, and produces image on sensor - image reflects off sensor back to lens - rear-most lens element(s) reflect image yet again, and if there is a strong concave )( rear surface, that focuses that light, imperfectly, as a bright spot. Consider this image - incoming red rays as reflected from sensor from left, hit concave lens element, right, and bounce back to a focus. If the focus is not on the sensor, a blurred patch results. http://www.antonine-education.co.uk/Image_library/GCSE/Concave_mirror.gif Especially noticeable if you have a strong light and dark tonal contrast in/near the center of the picture (e.g. dark tree and bright sky). Dark on dark produces no bright spot, and light-on-light without a dark area hides the spot. Purple color comes from coating on lens, possibly enhanced by any infra-red sensitivity ("magenta" blacks). I've "acquired" nearly identical hot spots with both the 75 Summicron and 35 F/1.4 ASPH - both also have concave back glass surfaces.
dem331 Posted June 30, 2016 Share #1415 Posted June 30, 2016 Many thanks Andy! I had never noticed that before. I was totally puzzled when I pulled this picture out, which I had never really looked at and saw the hotspot.

spylaw4 Posted June 30, 2016 Share #1417 Posted June 30, 2016 (edited) Well done Andy! You didn't waste any time! Oh, and I have no idea where your image is! I've got a shot virtually the same as Enrique's, shot from more or less the same location, but without the flare. IIRC the top structure is virtually reserved for the Rothschilds and is also the "entertaining" space. the shot was taken last Sunday from the top of No.1 Poultry Here's another view: Welcome, dear visitor!
