I really love my M8 and is been my companion almost every day since I bought it.... but I feel like I want to update and I would like to hear your opinions on this - as it was extremely helpful when I was thinking to buy my M8.
I use my M8 as a main camera, my old 7D is been stored in the bag for months...probably a year now. I recently start doing photography for some live gigs and my main struggle is shooting in dark environment. I use mainly my Voigtlander 35mm F1.4 which is helpful with its small aperture when situations occur...but it's really hard to keep the subject in focus at 1.4 - specially with a moving subject and a dark environment. But I don't do only gigs at night - actually I mostly enjoy doing street photography for myself - and I'm absolutely happy with the M8.

I'm a black and white shooters and I'm considering upgrading to a Monochrom (the first version!) even though I'm really afraid to miss the option to shoot color.

And I miss the full frame factor, honestly.

What you guys would advice me? I know the Monochrom is more versatile with the ISO...is full frame....and has the same body has the M8 (which I love! Dont really like the modern 246 etc)...

Or should I maybe try to get an M9? Even though apparently we pretty there with the ISO, right?

Hi jonnyboy,

You've got a lot of conundrums there...

Gigs and low light need high ISO ability and/or fast lenses.  Both have their drawbacks.

I am assuming flash is out of the question?? "Dragging the Shutter" can be effective with flash.

OTOH lighting at gigs usually has the players well lit, albeit by spotlights.

The first question to resolve is...do you really need full frame?  There are a lot of good APS sized sensors with huge ISO ranges.

For example my Fuji  XE-1 works well and takes just about any lenses made.  Recently shot a choir in a very dark setting and got reasonable pics. I often use B&W to capture, but also take a raw file for colour if needed.

I think you are going to have to work through this a bit yourself, no camera does everything.

cheers  Dave S :)

This don't make it easer:

I went from a M9 to a Monochrom (missing color) sold it and bought a 35mm M4P for full frame and a M8. I'm very happy with the M8 using it with M8RAW2DNG as option / fun.

My second camera is a Nikon DF.

The 1,33 crop is not a big issue, but i don't understand why i focus with the M8 much quicker then with the full frame M. (i use glasses)

I'd keep the M8, and use film for mono. You still have the M4?

A while back I yearned for the Monochrom, until my old wiry Leica repair man said, "use the M6, cheaper and better". I still yearn for the Monochrom, but in some ways he's correct.

That way you have. Leica, it is full frame, and it's mono. It has the advantage of doing color too if you ever want.

I wanted say the Nikon DF is my other option. But yes you have right with Film (still have the M4) you can use it with everything you like

Hi mnutzer..

Nice framing and composition.  Good geometry...HCB would be proud of you...Tones are all there.

But are you processing according to your credo....?

Thanks Dave for your pleasent comment.
On image processing in just one minute I'm still working. :)
Sometimes it takes more than an hour instead of only one minute for a single image processing.
This quote from Eric Kim should always remember me to spend more time outdoors for searching interesting motives than squatting behind the computer. ;)

Barn swallows.....If it is not obvious. A 1:1 crop from file.

I have been using Lambda's suggestion of using ISO160 and "pushing," as required. It's great! All I do is switch camera on, adjust exposure as best I can, compose, focus, and shoot. I do not even use the LCD, which does work on my camera.

Shot with 28 2.8 Elmarit VII

Now all I have to do is get over the feeling that I have to baby the M8 at all times.
