sergiofigliolia Posted August 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I was wondering if there is a difference in M8s between the version with the red dot(leica brand) link: http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/LeicaM8/Images/frontview-001.jpg and black dot. link: http://www.professionalphotographer.co.uk/assets/uploads/articles/large/2009/6/66a81495-865c-4221-a24a-1e7bcb5f13b8.jpg If I wasn't sufficiently clear I mean the Leica label above the lens. Advertisement Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Hi sergiofigliolia, Take a look here red dot vs black dot. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted August 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 20, 2011 The first is a bog standard M8. The other camera is the M8.2.
bpalme Posted August 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2011 Wattsy is correct.. also you can put a black or red dot on yourself.
pico Posted August 20, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2011 It's' rather unfortunate that you did not get one of the Green Dots. I think someone here can find you one, at a hefty price.
sergiofigliolia Posted August 21, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted August 21, 2011 ok and how about the chrome M8? I think I have never seen a chrome M8 without the red dot. Is there no Chrome M8.2???
jaapv Posted August 21, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 21, 2011 So you haven't seen my chrome M8 (or M6) . These dots are user.interchangeable.
lct Posted August 21, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...Is there no Chrome M8.2??? Yes but it has a red dot unfortunately. No problem to put a black dot instead though. I would prefer no dot at all or a chrome one but there is a hole behing it and chrome dots do not exist AFAIK. sergiofigliolia Posted August 21, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted August 21, 2011 so...how would I distinguish a m8 from a m8.2 on the used market? only the shutter (8000 -> m8, 4000 ->m8.2)? Is that right?
johnloumiles Posted August 21, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 21, 2011 so...how would I distinguish a m8 from a m8.2 on the used market?only the shutter (8000 -> m8, 4000 ->m8.2)? Is that right? Yes to the shutter but the 8.2 is actual chrome while the 8 is grey paint. It's pretty obvious in person and any reputable online dealer would differentiate. lct Posted August 21, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 21, 2011 There is no grey paint M8 or M8.2. - M8: chrome or black anodized - M8.2: chrome or black paint
lct Posted August 21, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 21, 2011 so...how would I distinguish a m8 from a m8.2 on the used market? only the shutter (8000 -> m8, 4000 ->m8.2)? Is that right? Almost. Essential differences are more accurate frame lines at medium distances for the M8.2 but slower shutter speeds (1/4000s instead of 1/8000s) for the latter. The shutter sound is slightly less noisy with the M8.2 as well. As regards cosmetics the M8.2 comes with a sapphire crystal display and a leatherette covering mimicking the traditional vulcanite of original Leicas. johnloumiles Posted August 21, 2011 Share #12 Posted August 21, 2011 My mistake ill shut up now.
bpalme Posted August 21, 2011 Share #13 Posted August 21, 2011 Just to make it a little more confusing there is the M8u. The U stands for upgrade....Which is what I have. Mine has the vulcanite and 1/4000 shutter but M8 framelines and does not have sapphire glass.
lct Posted August 21, 2011 Share #14 Posted August 21, 2011 Because you or your seller did not choose the total upgrade otherwise you would have the M8.2's frame lines and sapphire glass as well. The ony differences would then be black anodized M8u vs black paint M8.2 as well as red dot for the former vs black one for the latter. If i don't forget anything... spylaw4 Posted August 21, 2011 Share #15 Posted August 21, 2011 Beware the black M8.2 with Red Dot! It's been back to Leica for service and they've changed the dot. (I've got a spare Black Dot - just in case!)
farnz Posted August 21, 2011 Share #16 Posted August 21, 2011 so...how would I distinguish a m8 from a m8.2 on the used market?only the shutter (8000 -> m8, 4000 ->m8.2)? Is that right? Either M8 or M8.2 will be engraved on the hotshoe. Pete.
Jeff S Posted August 22, 2011 Share #17 Posted August 22, 2011 As mentioned, the black paint M8.2 comes with black dot; the chrome M8.2 comes with red dot. And you can freely change them on your own. Leica will not change the M8.2 black dot on the black camera when sent for service; I've done it. And, if one asks nicely, they won't even change a substitute black dot...as I put on my chrome M8.2...when sent for service. The M8 upgrade program involves 3 basic changes, available separately or together. These are the change in frame lines to 2m (as in the M8.2), the change in shutter (which sacrifices the 1/8000 speed, as with the M8.2), and the sapphire screen (as on the M8.2). The M8.2 still differs in some minor respects from a fully upgraded M8...the black dot on the black camera, black paint (M8.2) versus black chrome (M8), S mode, coverings, etc. Some dealers will mistakenly say that they have an M8 fully upgraded to an M8.2...not quite right. And Pete has it right about the hot shoe engraving. Jeff

Adrian Lord Posted August 27, 2011 Share #19 Posted August 27, 2011 There are some ultra-rare 8s with a cobalt blue dot. Japanese collectors have been known to pay $10000 for them.
adli Posted August 28, 2011 Share #20 Posted August 28, 2011 With the new M9-P, dots are out of fashion. Pity collectors
