Mylek Posted August 3, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, i'm presently using a 90mm summicron pre-ASPH lens on a M9. From what i see, i like it but i find it heavy to carry for the few times that i'm using it. Also, at close range, the f/2 DOF is quite narrow so i ended up using f/2.8 and up most of the time What will be the best choice in the f/2.8 range? I'm more interested in reportage and environmentals portraits. Regards!

sblitz Posted August 3, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2011 i use the summarit on the m9 and it works for me .... quality is great and price point is perfect considering that is among the least used focal lengths .... check out gangstas photo in the people section, slightly cropped, a bit desaturated, but taken with the 90mm summarit. Holybasil Posted August 3, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2011 I highly recommend the 90 Elmarit, latest version with the slide out hood. It's more solid built than the Summarit and the aperture difference is not noticable.
!Nomad64 Posted August 3, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2011 Elmarit M. It's a modern lens and its IQ is comparable to the AASPH's one. Actually Puts said about this latter that they brought the quality of the Elmarit up to f2. But do not expect it being any lighter. My chrome version weighs more than my black AASPH... tdtaylor Posted August 3, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 3, 2011 Plus one for the Elmarit M. I had the APO, and likewise forund I rarely used it at f2, plus it was rather heavy. Sold the cron, bought the Elmarit M, and have since been a happy camper. It is a very sharp lens, with nice rendering. I personally found it a little less clinical than the Cron APO. !Nomad64 Posted August 3, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 3, 2011 It is a very sharp lens, with nice rendering. I personally found it a little less clinical than the Cron APO. Me too. Albeit less perfect I actually happen to prefer the image rendition of the Elmarit to the AASPH's. Were it not for the fact that I badly needed the extra stop I think I'd have never needed the AASPH. I'm more interested in reportage and environmentals portraits. Regards! I agree the modern Elmarit-M is a great lens. I enjoyed mine very much. According to the 7th ed Hove Leica pocket book, it weighs 410g, and so does the final e55-filter version of the Summicron pre-ASPH. I found their weights very similar, that's the reason I sold my Elmarit and kept the Summicron, which I also found performed nearly identical to the Elmarit from f/2.8 and smaller. My choice for a light weight 90 for travel etc is the so-called "thin" Tele Elmarit (weight 225g). I have no problem with flare as some people have stated. Another excellent option which I owned at one time is the CV 90/3.5 APO-Lanthar. Weight just a tad more than the thin T-E. Mine was sharp and crisp at all apertures, zero flare. If the half-stop penalty isn't a deal-breaker, it's worth serious consideration.
UliWer Posted August 3, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 3, 2011 Why not the younger cousin of the praised 2.8/90 Elmarit - the 2.5/90 Summarit?
lars_bergquist Posted August 3, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2011 I have owned the 90mm Pre-ASPH Summicron, I still own a decent v.2 Tele-Elmarit (quite soft in the corners at 2.8) though I never use it, and I own and use a Elmarit-M which is a solid and very sharp lens. But had I not already owned it, I would have bought the 90mm Summarit. I have used its 75mm sibling during my M8 days, and it was really excellent, optically and mechanically. And it is both a tad faster and a good deal lighter than the Elmarit. The old man from the Age of the 9cm Elmar
lct Posted August 3, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2011 ...i'm presently using a 90mm summicron pre-ASPH lens on a M9. From what i see, i like it but i find it heavy to carry for the few times that i'm using it... What will be the best choice in the f/2.8 range?... I would say the last Elmarit (# 11807) as well but it is almost as bulky as your Summicron: 76 x 56 mm, 410 g for the black version. The "thin" Tele-Elmarit would be a better choice size wise but it flares a lot and i own it already so i finally went for the tiny Macro-Elmar 90/4. It is not an f/2.8 lens though... Twotone Posted August 3, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2011 I recently bought a chrome 90mm Elmarit f/2.8 ,1966 version. A fantastic lens,IMO, especially for the money you can get them for.
lct Posted August 3, 2011 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2011 Hardly a small lens though.
Twotone Posted August 3, 2011 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2011 Hardly a small lens though. True however not massive on an M3:D The hood (IUFOO) is pretty big though and ugly.
wda Posted August 3, 2011 Share #14 Posted August 3, 2011 Another vote for the 90 Elmarit-M; a high performer is a reassuringly solid package. I have no hesitation in using it wide open.
250swb Posted August 3, 2011 Share #15 Posted August 3, 2011 And again my vote goes for the 90mm Elmarit M, one of Leica's very best lenses ever. Steve
Val Posted August 3, 2011 Share #16 Posted August 3, 2011 My vote Elmarit 90 2.8 latest version. You will be surprised by the image quality of this small lens. It is not big , not small and looks better on the M9 than a Cron. If you find one don't hesitate to get it. Excelent built quality. I can't even place it near a sumarit Sorry If money is not a great issue buy it. Don't invest in Sumarit as you will regret later.
Mylek Posted August 3, 2011 Author Share #17 Posted August 3, 2011 Thanks everybody! It seems that the Elmarit M is a good lens to look out for but how is looking the last Tele Elmarit (Made in Canada) compare to it? They seem smaller and easier to find... Val Posted August 3, 2011 Share #18 Posted August 3, 2011 The Tele-elmarit made in Canada it might get stuck as the barrel is oiled with maple syrup. Eh!
Mylek Posted August 3, 2011 Author Share #19 Posted August 3, 2011 depending of the grade and if the weather is cold. So i might be able to use it properly only for few months...
250swb Posted August 4, 2011 Share #20 Posted August 4, 2011 The Tele-Elmarit has a longer focusing action, which makes it slightly easier to focus accurately (not so much like a on/off switch), but the image quality isn't as good as the later M version.
