pgk Posted June 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK. So, a couple of years back I bought a couple of 'black dots' in a moment of enthusiasm. Stuck one on my M8 and forgot about the other. A few weeks ago I realised that I am actually not interested in personalising my cameras (I sort of realised this when I also removed 'collected' cameras and bits and pieces from the box they lived in and decided to sell them off 'cos they were doing nothing living in a box!). As it happens I got back roughly what I paid DAG for the black dots + postage - so I can't complain (via the 'bay). But it set me wondering, why do we (or some of us) prefer to personalise our cameras I wonder. I have to say that I do consider the Leica rangefinder to be an iconic camera design. To me it simply is a classic piece of simple design and I actually do think that Leicas are 'pleasing' on the eye. But choices of finish and accessories are sometimes not enough. Sometimes for performance, other times for personal gratification. The products don't define me or make me who I am, I use them and, over time, make them more a part of me. I removed the white from my black camera's M8 logo as I felt it brash and not in keeping with the subtlety of the overall design. I wouldn't change the Vulcanite or anything as radical as that, but can understand what drives people to do such modifications. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jeff S Posted June 17, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 17, 2011 My M cameras have always been stock...no accessories or modifications of any sort...except for the occasional change to black dot (the black M8.2 saved me the trouble). Why? I like the understated look better than the red dot, and it's cheap and easy to do. Simple as that. Used acetone on one, then black stick. Looks like crap. I love it. I don't even think of selling them. (Would not mind trading in two well-used consecutive serial numbered M4s, for one good one though) However, all my Ms have a grip, and a motor or Rapidwinder, and lens focusing assists largely due to hand injuries. farnz Posted June 18, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 18, 2011 For the first 3 years I put black, anti-slip stair tape on my M8 because the plastic covering was so slippery. It looked pretty ropey but worked very well although it needed replacing after a few months and I think the grit added to all the crud making a bee-line for the sensor. I've since replaced the covering (and the stair tape:rolleyes:) with a Cameraleather covering and added a Thumbie. Both of these are to provide better handling, which they do.
