Wide angle lens for CL camera

Just bought a nice Leica CL set with the classic 40mm and 90mm lens, but would like to have a nice wide-angle (in the 20s) lens to use on the camera. Zeiss or Voigtlaender could be appreciated too. What's my best choice within budget (<1000 euro)?

This very much depends on your expectations. Which max. aperture would you prefer? Does size matter? Which kind of look do you want to achieve? Are you looking for a 21, 24 or 28?

In order to give you a reasonable recommendation, these questions should be answered first :)

As for the focal lenght - although they are quite close to each other, they are quite different in their usability and look. It would be helpful for you to try out the different focal lengths and then decide what fits your needs best - they all fit in to your kit quite well and you could also combine 21 and 28 as that makes perfect sense.

I'd love the lense to be faster than f/2.8 and about 24mm... size is not a real issue, but I fear it's hard to find quality within mentioned price range. So I was just hoping someone using the CL had a brilliant tip ;)

Well the only wide angle around 24 and faster than 2.8 would be the 24 Summilux ASPH - I guess this one is not an option for you then ;)

You could look into the f/2.8 ones - there are brilliant lenses out there, especially the Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 is supposed to be extremely good. Buildquality is probably on par with your CL lenses, it's tack sharp and has a nice draw and a used one would even save you some bucks. The Zeiss 28/2.8 and the 21/4.5 offer similar quality.

If 24 is your prefferd length you should definately have a closer look on the Zeiss 25!

The 15mm Voiglander works for me on the CL. It is virtually glued to the body. I use nothing else.

Caveat: the light meter does not work on my camera. In fact, I snipped it out.

The CL has frame lines for 28mm but not 24mm - this is something you should take into account. After all, it's not digital, so you can't immediately check what composition you just took. For me, this means I'd rather have more accurate frame lines.

That said, I have shot my 24mm on the CLE and have been very satisfied with the results.

Either way, at 28mm or 24mm, the Zeiss options are definitely to be considered seriously. The 25mm f/2.8 was a lens I seriously considered (over the extremely reputable 24mm Elmarit-M) before I purchased my 24 Lux (I wanted the speed). And even now, in terms of compact size, minimal distortion, and color rendition - sometimes I still wish I had the Zeiss.

Depending on what your local store's policy is, I would recommend you taking the lens out for a day - shoot it silly and then view the printed results. If you like it, keep the lens. If not, return it.

Thanks everyone for confirming there really are many options :) The photoshop around the corner had a used Voigtlander Skopar 25mm f/4 lens for cheap, so that's the one I'll be trying out now with a couple of rolls. It's not coupled to the rangefinder, but I assumed that getting things in focus when stopping it down to f/8 or f/11 shouldn't be too hard :) Looks like this'll be a fun street shooter, and the range 25 - 40 - 90 sounds versatile enough to me.

I've used the CV 21/4 and had good results in most situations, but sometimes too much distortion. I like the 24 focal length on the LX3 and would love to have a 24/3.8 for my M. I like being able to set it at 5.6 and not worry too much about focusing on street shots.

Sounds like one of the CV/Zeiss 25's would be best for the money on the CL, but no < 2.0. You'll need the viewfinder too of course. I'd just get the CV 25/4 for around $600 and push Tri-X.

Cool camera! Have fun.

Isn't there some limitation on using wide angle lenses on the CL, to do with the rear element of the lens hitting the swinging meter cell? I seem to remember that this applied to the early Leitz 21 and 28mm lenses - how is it with the CV wides?

Of course we checked that first, didn't need to meter it though as there appeared plenty of space for the light meter when we just optically checked it. The flange depth on the CV 25/4 is quite shallow actually.

The CV 21 (both versions) too doesn't pose problems of protrusion into CL.

You should also consider the CV Ultron 28/1,9 Aspherical. Compared to the 40 is quite more a wide angle and is pretty fast. It is a very reliable lens, sharp and well built. nd it probably match your full rangefinder window.

As a last plus, price is well under 500 euros.

Used 28 elmarit 2.8

Slow but bitchen lense.

I love mine!

I was looking for a wide angle that I wouldn't be too worried about to take sea kayaking. I got a Voigt 25mm non-rangefinder coupled f4 with a voigt viewfinder for around £190. It seems really well made and has a nice focus paddle, smooth focus action and nice aperture ring action. Very compact with its built in hood. The focus has click stops at a couple of points (1m,1.5m, and 3m) to aid focus guestimating. I've used it once and it seems very sharp out to the edges and with good flare resistance. This is into the sun.

Another example with the lens here.

The full sized files look sharp. I'm chuffed with it. The fact that it's not rangefinder coupled isn't a problem. I suspect my 24 elmarit will be sitting in storage for a while.

Great colours! This is also with the voigt 25mm. It shows the lens' sharpness better than my previous post.
