roydonian Posted June 7, 2011 Share #41 Posted June 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had hoped that the quoted posting from the singer in question would have turned out to be a hoax. However the posting from ‘6’ is still there on Steve Huff’s site. Huff has now closed the thread, saying that “everything that needed to be said has been said… I refuse to keep them open as I do not enjoy the negativity.” So we must assume that the posting was genuine. Perhaps ‘6’ hit the mark when he said (later in the thread; “I’m not a 24/7 nice perfect guy so sorry to burst your bubble, some days I’m an asshole, unlike anyone else here can be of course.” As I said in an earlier posting in another thread, if Leica wanted to release advance information on the M9-P, all they had to do was to put out a press release. It would have been in better taste done that way than via a semi-articulate paid 'celebrity'. Best regards, Doug

earleygallery Posted June 7, 2011 Share #45 Posted June 7, 2011 It's on Steve Huff's webpage, under the thread: "The New Leica M9-P?". Seal uses the ~6 symbol. Click on it and you will be redirected to his webpage.I couldn't care less what he thinks as a private person, but if he believes to speak this utter nonsense in a capacity as Leica's voice, than I do have a problem with it. And hopefully somebody else in Solms as well. Thanks, clearly genuine then. I have no problem with his rant - we see worse here on a regular basis - but I do have a problem with it coming from a 'paid/official global spokesperson' for Leica. They (therefore us as Leica customers) are paying for this?! Shame. Rather arrogant also to say that other users opinions don't count (whereas his do apparently - to quote " First of all, despite what some of you think Steve is or isn’t implying….I DO NOT HAVE AN M9-P or whatever Leica’s next camera is going to be so we can put that to bed. Secondly, I have no idea why people get so indignant here, you have one guy talking about if he had a say, he’d “get rid of that ridiculous red dot”. Well you don’t have a say (thank God)" ). And it's odd that Mr Huff starts the thread saying he's seen the M9-P and later says he doesn't know anything about it! Like a couple of overexcited kids who have sneakily unwrapped the presents under the Xmas tree when no one was looking and now deny they know what's there so they don't get into trouble. Vieri Posted June 7, 2011 Share #49 Posted June 7, 2011 Allegedly, he is a paid ambassador for Leica. Read his most recent rants on Steve Huff's web page were the "ambassador" attacks posters who dare criticising Leica. I only hope this was not Leica talking through its "ambassador", but rather an emotional singer not being up to his new task in the corporate world. From one of Seal's last nights posts/rants on Steve Huff's web page : ".............................Theo there’s the bickering about Leica bumping up the price again for this new mystery camera, if it’s too expensive for you or you don’t agree with Leica’s pricing policies then DON’T BUY ONE! I represent Leica and am paid to do so. I do it not because I need the money, I do it with pride so it really ticks me off when people jump to conclusions about pricing, what Leica should or shouldn’t be concentrating on, how the M9 or X1 isn’t worth the money or how Leica better watch their backs because Fuji are doing this with X100 or whatever. They are a small company who make the best glass in the world, they also make a damn good box with which to mount that glass. In truth NONE OF YOU know what Leica’s business model or strategy is, no one knows why they price certain things the way they do. I do have an insight into how the company works as it’s part of my position as their global ambassador to know this information, that said they are trying REALLY HARD to bring new products to the market for us to enjoy. Do any of you think that companies like Fuji, Canon and the likes are years ahead of Leica with their bells, whistles and whizz-bangs? Well Sölms is full of brilliant minds who innovate all the time, they just don’t yield to the uninformed demands of the masses like other company’s do, instead they opt for the fundamentals needed to MAKE BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS, THAT’S IT!. Incidentally Leica invented the AF system, had the patent for ages and because of one guy who was misleading the company, they sold the patent to Canon because this one guy was of the opinion that “auto-focus was for idiots and who ever heard of such a stupid idea”. However this is not a reflection on the rest of the great minds who work their asses off in this company. There are lots of factors that go into bringing product to market for us all to enjoy and those factors get even more heavy when your company is small and has a history of excellence to keep living up to as does Leica. So it’s simple, if you have issues with what Leica do then don’t frigging buy any of their equipment! We get it…it’s not for everyone, but then just stop bickering and spurting negative crap about them and just get something else. Despite what anyone thinks or says, Leica products are for those who seek the elite. YES, I said elite and that’s one of the reasons why their prices are extraordinarily high. If that policy doesn’t work for you then it’s cool, it’s not the end of the world as there are plenty of choices." I hope this is not Leica speaking through its ambassador It's on Steve Huff's webpage, under the thread: "The New Leica M9-P?". Seal uses the ~6 symbol. As far as Leica, I will keep enjoying my M9 but strongly advise them to change their "ambassador" with someone better fit to the task of representing such products and history: Seal, clearly, while probably comfortable in a bar brawl, is not. Hi Marketing people have a different budget from technical people, and a different viewpoint. They tend to live in a world of their own I dont mind a red dot on a lens (or blue one) it is when if falls off I feel hard done by, I dont need an ad on my camera, like Nikon, Canon or Olympus. I'm suffering a lot from M9 owners reading the script on the top plates of my M2s, ignoring the dinks and going aaaaaaa. Any of my M2's cost less than having a new top plate, on a M9, they are all strangers in the street, so I'm not rude enough to tell them. edmond_terakopian Posted June 7, 2011 Share #51 Posted June 7, 2011 I haven't read the original thread (anyone have a link handy?) but I would suggest we look at the comments before his and any personal attacks on him before we judge his reply. Cheers, Edmond Even if there were personal attacks, an "ambassador" (spokesperson) has to be able to differentiate between him/her as a private person on the one hand and the role as representative of a company on the other hand. But read the thread, I don't seee any personal attacks before he went off with his rant. People were expressing and discussing opinions about Leica and a potential new product. denoir Posted June 7, 2011 Share #55 Posted June 7, 2011 I don't really get what is so objectionable about Seal's comments. He's essentially telling the truth. The first part (don't buy it if you can't afford it) may be a bit insensitive as I'd guess that most Leica owners don't have his kind of budget and thus they do care about Leica pricing policy. However at the same time that is perfectly true - Leica has always been expensive and like with everything else you do a cost/benefit analysis. There's no automatic entitlement to have Leica gear at the price of your own choosing. I could say that I'd buy a 0.95 Noctilux if the price was half of the current retail price, but what's the point? Leica sets the price and we buy it or not, just like with any other commodity. The middle part was just some vague praise of Leica as an innovator and a small company that does its best to produce good gear. Whatever. Fine by me, but I couldn't care less. Finally there's his 'elitism' comment, which I guess is what people object to. The thing is - he's entirely correct. You can interpret it in two ways, and he's right in both. Leica lenses are some of the best in the world, optically speaking. There are few others that compete in the same category (the old Zeiss vs Leica argument). It is uncontroversial to say that Leica does produce some of the finest lenses that you can get your hands on. So it is elite in that respect. The other interpretation is of Lecia as a status symbol. And he's right there too. Leica has at least in modern history made no attempt to hide that they consider those with an abundance of money and a lack of taste an important market segment. If you want to feel queasy, just google "gold leica m6". Yes, Leica does fulfill the same role as a Rolex does or any other ostentatious luxury symbol. That's what all those special editions are about. It might be unfortunate for those of us who are interested in photography and not jewelry to be associated with that bunch, but Seal is right that it's elitist in that respect. As for the inappropriateness of him saying so as an official Leica spokesperson.. come on. Those that care about the technical benefits of Leica won't give a damn about any of that. And those that are attracted to the status symbol part will only like it when they are included in this 'elite' by the virtue of owning a Leica camera. The only people that will really be resentful is those that can't afford the gear and thus don't appreciate the arrogance - but they don't matter to Leica anyway. jaapv Posted June 7, 2011 Share #57 Posted June 7, 2011 I think, Luka, that Leica is a high profile that generates high passion, and this storm in a teacup was no different. I agree there was much ado about nothing. Maybe Steve should try and get President Medejev on board. He already is an avid Leica fan. Now that would be a coup! Washington Posted June 7, 2011 Share #59 Posted June 7, 2011 Ok, I have a pretty good idea who Seal is now because I actually to a long time to read on his website.
