someonenameddavid Posted May 29, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 29, 2011 Can one of you super-leica founts of knowledge clarify something for me: the null-serie leicas were sent out by Leitz as a field test prior to the launch of the model A (I think I am correct) when they were returned to Wetzlar ( I assume they were all returned, yet I live in hope) were they remachined into standard model A s (or even Bs.. Now I expect some replicas to follow at less than €1000 each ... Regarding the description of the 'O' Series camera - I do not read German but the English translation appears a little ambiguous to me. (Salò - Gardasee - is 25 km from Brescia) About the 0 series... almost any of the 0s has had a story of its own and the "1 million baby" seems to be one of the most well-documented... I give up, of course, because is really a field for real historicians and not simply passionates like me... The only conclusion that I can draw is there are, around the world, rich people that really have decided that Leicas are a sort of obsession for them (and/or of course, people fro which 1MEuro is not such a huge amount... ). I think this sale will be much discussed in certain circles... surely, IF something "strange" wuold emerge all the people around Westlicht / Leicashop biz can be in a risky position in the market... personally, I hope not for I've always considered Leicashop a trustable seller, and in the last 15 years bought no few items from them... The Zeiss 'dummy' lens was made in a few hours and comprises just two 'lens' elements and a mount with a dummy aperture ring and focusing ring. The 40/0.33 designation appears to have been plucked out of thin air to try and impress the Japanese competition. Now 45 years later at least two potential buyers decide it's worth bidding for up to €60,000 ... but by way of consolation the successful bidder also got a Contarex Bullseye camera as part of the package I expect the seller is very pleased. I suspected something about...... the aperture mechanism of Contarex is so absurdly complcated that wasn't worth to engineer it for a display-only lens... The recession does not necessarily affect wealthy collectors who are determined to acquire scarce/rare/unique items at any price. SideB Posted May 30, 2011 Share #20 Posted May 30, 2011 Can someone suggest an explanation for the bizarre prices bid for the lots with multiple lenses: ie 2 x Summitar 5cm €2880, 3 x Elmar 9cm €3120, 5 x Hektor 13,5cm €4080. These are crazy prices and many times more than individual lenses in far better condition fetched. There must be a reason so I am hoping someone can tell me what it is.
