esquire53 Posted February 5, 2012 Share #831 Posted February 5, 2012 Something to do with D-Day landing area?
jele Posted February 5, 2012 Share #832 Posted February 5, 2012 Yes and no... The view point is not in Normandy. But... it's strategical and historical "importance" is clearly in relation with June 1944 events... However, it's importance, during WW2, can't be restricted to only the year 1944. esquire53 Posted February 5, 2012 Share #833 Posted February 5, 2012 something around Battle of the Bulge on the French side?
jele Posted February 5, 2012 Share #834 Posted February 5, 2012 No. Strategic point from 1940 to late 1944...
esquire53 Posted February 6, 2012 Share #835 Posted February 6, 2012 so if it is late 44, I guess it can't be in the back country of Dunkirk
jele Posted February 6, 2012 Share #836 Posted February 6, 2012 You are "burning", my dear friend !!! It is "near" Dunkerque / Dunkirk. Go about 50 km West, and climb on the top of the viewpoint ! Cheers ! Jean
tollie Posted February 6, 2012 Share #837 Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) Well... 50km due west of Dunkirk... puts the point in the Channel... but a bit south west places the point off the a16 route on the route to Cap Nez... perhaps the closest point to the UK from France. During WWII the Germans used this area (Cape Nez) for the installation of large guns to hit the UK and later used the area just to the east... and south of Calais for v1 launches. jele Posted February 6, 2012 Share #838 Posted February 6, 2012 Tollie, Bravo ! The viewpoint is the hill on top of Cap Blanc-Nez, facing Dover across the Channel. Since the D-day was expected at this point, about 33 or 35 km from UK, it was a strategic point during all these years. And Calais, Dunkirk and Boulogne were bombed frequently to maintain the stress, even after June the 6th 1944. On my picture, the small village is named Escalles. The "detroit" is at the wright hand side of the frame. By the way, it is a region worth visiting ! Your turn, now !!!
tollie Posted February 7, 2012 Share #839 Posted February 7, 2012 OK... I think this should be relatively easy given where I live. There is an island just to the right which is readily identifiable... can you guess the island group... and for bonus points the name of the larger island which is not shown on the right. Go...
