Thinking of finally getting a DMR- good idea or not anymore?

......But it's that DMR colour palette that I miss most, to tell the truth. Short of an S2 or a Phase back, I'm not sure where to get it these days.... Oh--and not being able to use my 19mm Elmarit on the Nikon is a real drag too.....It may be that I haven't put Leica glass on the D3 (I'm sure that contributes) but the files themselves are just not the same in terms of colour.

BTW--any suggestions are welcome. I wish Leica would hurry up with its "R solution"... :(

Now that I can understand....as for Leica glass on Nikon, and using a bouquet of pink roses as my subject, I shot comparisons of the 28 Elmarit v2 versus Nikkor 28/2 AIS vs 24-70 @ 28 vs14-24 @ 24. The color palette from the Leica was very different; subtleties in gradation that were simply not seen from any of the NIkkors. Startling difference, in fact. Not to mention the subtle details the Nikons did not render. The Leitax conversion takes 5 minutes, is fully reversible and might change your opinion about the Nikon as a DMR-alternative.

There is a problem for me with solutions such as Leitax if one also wishes to actively continue using film, as the lens mount cannot practicably be continuously changed before each type of shoot.

I am now actively looking for a low-number of actuations DMR, preferably without an extra camera body attached. I do not think that there is a suitable alternative at this time. If anyone wishes to get rid of theirs...:D

There are many fine Nikon FM-2n and FM3 bodies out there that will serve that role. I own an FM2n that's the size of a Leica rangefinder and built rock-solid.

Posto, the R8/DMR is still the finest digital SLR I have ever used. I bought mine used in 2007. It remains my principle tool for image making in the digital realm. The files from the DMR is amazing. Make sure to keep yours open for the 2 best R lenses, the 80 Lux, the best lens ever in the R line and the 35 Lux, another most have lens. In the wides, the R 19 & R24 are incredible lenses. Along with many of the other DRM owners, I can say without reservation that you will NEVER forget what amazing images this camera provides. Enjoy & be well. :D

The photographer I bought my backup DMR from replaced it with the Sony A900. He tells me the color quality isn't DMR but it's quite good. Might be worth looking into. I suspect that the A900, being derived from Minolta specs, will not have mirror clearance problems with the 19mm Elmarit-R

Unfortunately in my experience the FM2 viewfinder isn't in the R8 class let alone the SL that serves as my film camera. The FM-series cameras also share a weak link in the tripod socket that will break out of the camera's main casting if over-stressed (likewise the R4 through R7 bodies). The SL/SL2 tripod socket is on a sub-frame that breaks instead of the main casting and is easily replaced. A broken main casting in an FM or R4-series camera means shopping for a replacement camera.

The Sony A900 has a class leading viewfinder and most users find the image colour exceptional, particularly if coming from Nikon.

Like Doug, I am mostly a wildlife photographer where accurate colour is vital. The latest (and only!) firmware update has increased auto focusing speed with long lenses, another must for wildlife whilst focusing accuracy was always excellent. After two and a half years using this cam and coming from the R9/DMR combo, I am still very pleased with it.

At the wider end of the lens scale, you won't be disappointed with the A/F Zeiss or MInolta G glass either. That large viewfinder makes it a doddle to manually focus if you are a M/F

purist.

A personal view of course, but then they all are here as must be your decision, good luck whatever you do.:)

Overall, would you say that this combination has any appreciable advantages over or is more practical to use than the R9/DMR combo?

Like Doug, I am used to SL2s and R8/R9s viewfinders- although I must say that I once considered but did not really try out the Sony A900 or it's cheaper brother.

Thanks Doug (and Dave)...

I'll check out the Sony I guess... I sure miss using my R glass.... Anyone know about adapters? Or is using the Sony a more Leitax-like solution?

I am pretty sure that there is a way that you can change the mount ON THE BODY of a Sigma SLR, one with the Foveon sensor.

I will see whether I can find some info on it. Someone here has one IIRC

Dear Benjamin

I was wondering if these Files and Colours others refer to would be evident when using much more meagre R lens (like a small zoom) with a DMR as the 80 Lux you refer to is an expensive but fast lens.

Only just seen your reply post to mine. Yes Andy is correct if you need to use Leica R lenses. However there are many Alpha mount legacy Minolta lenses out there, the G (pro) lenses are superb as are most of the Sony G lenses. You would need to stop down and manually focus obviously with R lenses and Leitax mount conversions.

Oh yes - the 4.0 35-70 shines on the DMR.

Andy--thanks! I did find that too, was just coming back to edit my question...

I wonder if the A 850 would work too...

Anyway, it's an interesting option...

I am using the A850 and have 4 R lenses, 19mm, 28mm, 35-70 f4,0, 180 f2.8 Apo, converted to alpha mounts via Leitax. Works well. Along the way, I picked up a CZ 16-35 and a 70-400mm G lens. I have the DMR for 4 years before deciding to make the switch.
