ryee3 Posted March 5, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I ve heard about the 280 mm f4 R lens being outstanding for its image quality etc. Is it becoming a collectors item and worth the recent higher prices or will it lose its value since the R system is no longer being support? What was the retail cost of the lens when purchased new? Thanks for your thoughts.

Rather, it's not easy to come by, and people recognise the unsurpassed image quality, so it's in strong demand (remember that it's usable on Canon/Nikon digital cameras). I've got one and it's going nowhere soon.
jaapv Posted March 5, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 5, 2011 It is simply the best lens in its focal length ever built - so it is a sought-after user lens.
luigi bertolotti Posted March 5, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 5, 2011 In 2007, in Europe (France/Italy) the Apo Telyt 280 f4 had a pricelist around 5500 Euros.

IMHO the recent higher prices are justified as user equipment. It's that good.
strynoski Posted March 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2011 Several years ago, I sold off my Leica R system (R6, R7) and converted to Canon EOS digital full-frame (5D, 5DII.) I kept my favorite Leica R lenses (APO-Telyt 280 f4, APO-Elmarit 180 f2.8, and APO-Summicron 90 f2 ASPH.) I bought Novoflex Leica R to EOS adapters, and all three lenses work perfectly on the Canon full-frame bodies. I have no trouble focussing on the Canon screens (even stopped down) and I find the Leica optics significantly brighter and contrastier than the Canon lenses--so much so that I usually dial in minus one-third or two-thirds exposure compensation. (This despite the heavy anti-aliasing filter on the Canons--which I hope they improve on the next full-frame model!) Steve T
topoxforddoc Posted March 6, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 280/4 is one of the finest lenses ever made by Leica - truly astonishing. You'd have to prise it out of Doug Herr's hands. I won't be selling mine (or my 180/2 summicron!!). Best wishes,
james.liam Posted June 2, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2011 Two questions, if someone can answer.... -What are the metal loops on each side of the lens for? -What is considered a fair price for the lens these days, 3-CAM, in mint condition?
luigi bertolotti Posted June 2, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 2, 2011 They are for attaching a strap, in case one feels not well balanced the body+lens combo with the strap attached to the body. The concept of "fair price" is always personal for such special items... this reputable shop has one for sale now, just to have an idea... : https://www.leicashop.com/vintage/leica-reflexobjektive-apo-telytr-4280-c-1000_1007_100738.html consider that they usually are in a rather "high" range
wildlightphoto Posted June 2, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 2, 2011 -What is considered a fair price for the lens these days, 3-CAM, in mint condition? If it's truly 3-cam it's been modified from 3rd cam or ROM.
