Hmmm... Too Good To Be True?

Have been keeping an eye out for any M8 bargains over the last month or two when this afternoon I stumbled upon a deal from a selling website (never heard of it but that doesnt mean much)

And despite me being EXTREMELY tempted I can't help but feel the offer is too good to be true...

The website offers an FAQ of helpful tips but no protection so if I was paying through Paypal I would be totally exposed...

The deal they are offering is...

1. Leica M8 Body in mint shape (some of the paint on the M8 is missing). With box, instructions, Strap, charger, 8GB memory card, 2 Batteries (1 original, 1 aftermarket). The camera has 4500 shutter actuation

2. 3 Leica UV/IR filters. E60, E55, E46. Mint

3. Metz 54MZ-4i flash. Mint, with case, SCA 3502 M5 adapter, no instructions (available for free download on the Metz website)

4. Leica 21mm f2.8 Elmarit E60, Mint, has both caps. tack sharp wide angle lens, no fungus/oil, may have a VERY small speck of dust ot two, but images are clean and I can't see any in the images.

5. Voightlander Nokton 50mm f1.1 58mm thread, Like new. 1 month old, looks and works perfect, no flaws. comes with box.

6. Leica 90mm f2 Summicron Leitz E48, 3rd version, 1st production run (hood covers aperature ring when retracted) Mint shape, smooth focus, no fungus, no oil, little dust, has Very minor cleaning marks on front element, definately will not cause any quality issue or even be seen in photos. Hard to even notice them) very minor. Comes with box.

The website is VivaStreet.co.uk and the total price they are asking is £2,100 for everything!

Now I'm not an expert but from browsing the last few months and having a general understanding of pricing - that really is a little too good to be true is it not?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

It could be true and a bargain, it has no red flags really except the price, which is about 1000 pounds too low. It would be worth collecting it. I would be quite nervous about making this a money gone - maybe the stuff will come kind of transaction, though.

It's a puzzler...

Is there anywhere I could ask him to list it so I offer myself some kind of protection?

Would eBay be best? Paypal doesn't offer any kind of security does it?

I'd be happy to fork out that for it but it's too much on a whim....

Damn!

Have you mailed the seller asking relevant questions about the kit, how long owned, did they buy it new, has it had to go back to Leica at anytime etc. You can often gauge if someone appears are genuine by the way they answer such things, if its a dont know, or just yes no answers then alarm bells may start to ring but if more flowing info comes back such as had it since/ where they bought it, or yes/no its not had to go back you often find people will say not its not had the xyz problem etc totally unprompted. You get the picture ask questions where an expanded replu could be forthcoming, scammers often simply dont know the simple answers and are tripped through that.

It's a free local ads site, put up onto the internet. It's like buying from Loot, not even Exchange and Mart, where you have to pay for the advert.

You have as much protection as if you were buying through the free local paper.

Don't part with any money until you have the stuff in your hand and have verified beyond doubt that it's not nicked.

The ad below the one you are looking at is for an M9 at £2,100. I have emailed David Stephens who had an M9 stolen in-transit recently...

If it looks too good to be true than it probably is... I briefly considered making an offer on a nice looking 75/2 Summicron listed on eBay recently. It was priced about $1000 less than comparables, the seller had no previous sales, and nobody was bidding on it. I sent the seller some questions but received no reply. Too good to be true...

There's another M9 for sale via that site this morning. Many of these "new" expensive cameras seem to be sold in the Aberdeen area (as the OP's M8 was). It's all highly suspicious.

I have emailed the vendor asking to meet so that I can buy with cash. Let's see what happens - nothing I assume.

I think that the local police up there should be informed.
