The R solution - more details

Rick,

I use a similar one to the Hoodman, which is the Seagull brand, on my 5D2. A 5mm self-adhesive plastic surround attaches around the LCD and the viewfinder/loupe can be clipped and unclipped to it as required. I was wary at first that the plastic surround would come away with the loupe as it was unclipped so I bought a back up but I've been using it for 12 months and it hasn't happened so far. I don't notice the surround when I'm shooting without the loupe.

Pete.

Well, this is all interesting and I hope everybody gets what they have been desiring for sometime, but I have my own R solution.

My R4 and 50 Cron.:p And dreams of an R8/R9 keep me warm at night. And an 80 Lux...etc.

There are some of us (not many, I am sure) that realize how good the R cameras are and we use them everyday professionally without the need for a "digital solution".

Plenty of them out there at bargain prices. No worries here.:)

The cost of our 'solution' is.....??????

It's as close to a 'bridge camera' as it will be, allow use of R glass, it has the auxilary grip to help give us something to hold on to - though the little finger loop doesn't seem to be the best way to go. Be nice if had a few FPS but three is okay - it's 'weather-sealed'.

So while it's WAY late, I'm glad they seemed to have been lstening, while many of us were called 'whiners', they have given we R glass owners a Leica body to use them on.

Now it's, let's see how well it works, and how much it costs, but it is the M/R lens body, an all in one Leica, and that has to help Leica and we users over time.

Also, just how well will the finder work with our R glass in stop-down for depth of field checks??? Has to be at as good as a standard R finder I hope......

We'll see and hear answers about all these and many more questions in the months to follow........ Here's another question - how well is the EVF finder sealed???

Since it'll work off LiveView I expect it will work like it does on my 5D2 with R lenses in stop down mode; the monitor (EVF in this instance) will increase its brightness and provide a clear, noisier but quite usable view.

Thanks. I pretty much figured it would at the very least be useable - and it sounds if it's similar to your set-up that it should be more than adequate.

A 35mm digital won't come close to 6x7, 6x9,6x9 film

Are you sure it won't come close? This 2002 article on Luminous Landscape compared 35mm digital very favorably with 6x7 film: State-of-the-Art 35mm Digital Vs. Medium Format Film [... actually, he concluded there was no longer any advantage to shooting medium format film]. In the ten years since then, 35mm digital has gotten just a little better. ;)

This solution will work for me. I can use my wide to short telephoto M- lenses for that work and take advantage of the rangefinder, and then mount my longer glass on an adapter and use the live view to focus those (usually on a tripod).

Now we get to see how all of those R-lenses work on a high-megapixel camera.

I will wonder when the camera and all of those accessories will be readily available. I hope next March when I will be in the market for it.

So at $6,995 for just the camera... add ??? for the adapter and the EVF and you're looking at what, 8K+?

I've used the much touted EVF on the Sony A77 and hate it with a passion! I'll take the R8/9 OVF any day, though for stationary subjects (wildlife, landscapes) the EVF with focus magnification on the Sony makes for images that would never be possible on any Leica that I've ever owned.

The camera is at least a year away. It's going to have to be insanely good to justify that price when you can buy a Nikon D800E with some outstanding glass for the same price and not have to deal with an EVF. This entire issue depends entirely on the quality of the CMOS sensor Leica is putting on this camera. If it produces files anything like those from the Canon 1DX I have zero interest.

Canon has put most of their effort into producing noise-free files at extreme iso, smearing microcontrast at low iso as the inevitable result. I've worked with 1DX files and enlarged them to extreme dimensions in an effort to find their limits.

If Leica does the same with this new camera I'll stick with my DMR.

They already do on my 24MP 5D MkII.;)

Pete.

Take the AA filter off then you'll see how they do on a high-resoultion camera.

I'm on the same page. The New M will have to produce insanely good files to tempt me from the DMR's files and OVF of the R8. No offense intended toward those who love this feature, but I wouldn't have any use for one of the most expensive and finicky subsystems of the New M, the rangefinder.
