JHAG Posted January 10, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need an all-round lens for some shots with my DMR. I heard the 35/70 f. 4 was the best pick, conceived through and through in Solms.
Advertisement Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Hi JHAG, Take a look here R 28/70. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted January 10, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2011 I looked into the various zooms (for use with film) a couple of years ago. The later 35/70 f4 is indeed the best overall performer, although compared a 35 with my older type Summicron the prime lens was still obviously better (from my results anyway). The older 35/70's f3.5 are also very good. There is also a mega expensive f2.8 lens if you can find one! The 28/70 suffers from more distortion apparently, and not very well regarded, but with the crop sensor on the DMR it's less of an issue and worth considering. I guess overall the 35/70 in a ROM version would be best for you, if you really want the convenience of the zoom lens over taking a couple of primes. jaapv Posted January 10, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 10, 2011 I had an 28-70, not a bad lens, but it is not in the league of quality of the latest 35-70 4.0. You can always add an Elmarit 28 to the 35-70, that is quite a small lens to carry and that combo matches the quality of the DMR sensor much better imo. I cannot find any quality loss to prime lenses with the 35-70, if anything it has more sparkle and clarity. The 28-70 is not Solms-designed btw. It is a Sigma lens which has been slightly tweaked by Leica.
JHAG Posted January 10, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted January 10, 2011 In fact I have 3 long lenses : APO 180, Macro 100 and Macro 60. I don't need a wide angle, reason why I'm thinking of this.
jaapv Posted January 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 10, 2011 In that case I would forget about the zoom and just get an Elmarit 28. Or maybe a 35. There is nothing wrong with the 60.
psquared Posted January 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 10, 2011 I do not have experience with the 35-70/4, but I have used the 28-90/2.8-4.5 asph. The latter is an impeccable zoom. The only thing I didn't like about it was the variable wide-open aperture in the zoom range. I would highly recommend it. Then there is the 35-70/2.8 asph ... masjah Posted January 10, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nobody has mentioned the "new" 28-90! Probably the best all rounder, especially with a DMR, when the 28 wide end (as distinct from 35) would be really useful given the DMR crop factor. It's got a better range at the tele end too, and the overall quality is really very good indeed. It's my choice of travel lens. Only problem is availability and price. The Scottish Dealer had one recently that went quite rapidly and cost £1600 or so (maybe it was even £1700 I can't quite remember). Edit: Peter, our posts crossed! topoxforddoc Posted January 10, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2011 Johan, I've had both the 28-70ROM and the 28-90 asph. The 28-90 asph is a real beaut. By comparison the 28-70 is just ok - barrel distortion at 28. But the 28-70 is alright though - not stellar, but it's cheap. The 35-70/4ROM is good though (not as good as the 28-90 asph) and is excellent value for money. Best wishes,
