Popular Post Al Leb Posted December 1, 2013 Popular Post Share #164 Posted December 1, 2013 My 1967 silver M4 works fine and is my favourite classic M. I thought I would give it a new look, here it is ready to get some brassing around the edges. And no, I didn't do it myself, It has been done by a specialist this side of the channel. philcycles Posted December 1, 2013 Share #165 Posted December 1, 2013 Well, I don't love my M4. Prefer my M3s and M2s. Why? I hate the loading system. It's not quick for me and I've been trying to come to grips with it for 20 years. I can load my M3 much faster than I can load my M4. YMMV

brianmcgloin Posted January 5, 2014 Share #168 Posted January 5, 2014 I have an M4-2 and I couldn't be happier. It was in immaculate condition (ha! until I started carrying it around EVERYWHERE). I'm aware some Leica people say it's not a real Leica M4 or some gibberish, I don't care. After 15+ years of lusting after one of these robust German cameras (borrowing friends' cameras, or fondling them in stores) I finally have one of my own. After reading everything I could find about the camera, some of the negatives like the steel gears (instead of brass) don't seem like negatives at all. One of these days I'll be able to replace the Soviet 50mm f3.5 Elmar copy lens with a real Summilux or Summicron. (The lens is multicoated and quite nice, it's just slow and doesn't couple properly. It was free) 5

aesop Posted March 5, 2014 Share #170 Posted March 5, 2014 ...see, you learn something new every day - thanks, John. And I definitely want one. ...well, it was only a matter of time before I finally found and bought my M4 (black chrome from 1975). Time to park the MPs (and the semi-retired M6) for a while. Here's to freedom from all manner of electronics - yup, the idea is to go meter-free. Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted May 27, 2014 Share #172 Posted May 27, 2014 I have had my M4 since new in 1967. My father gave me a body for my 21st birthday but I had to work all summer as a welder to buy a second hand 50 Summilux lens, sadly stolen during a house move in the 1980’s. My M4 is one of the earliest made at the 47th production camera. It has just had its first major service by Peter at CRR and is back to like new. The masks had started to grow fungus, the slow speeds were a bit iffy and there were slight signs of a light leak. It will still be working well long after my M8, 9 and 240 are landfill. Supposedly the M4 is the last Leica made before the cost accountants arrived. I have treated myself to a proper voltage regulating holder for SR44 cells for my MR-4 meter, as I had got bored finding that the Wein zinc air cells were flat when you needed them. Michael Geschlecht Posted May 27, 2014 Share #173 Posted May 27, 2014 Hello Wilson, I think if you check you will find that the M5 was probably as well made as the M4. If you take into account that all M's following the M3 also included cost cutting features. Even if they also had additional features. Whether M2, M4 or M5. Or any of their rangefinderLESS contemporaries. The big jump came with the M4-2 which was the beginning of the modern philosophy of camera manufacture. As with the R cameras replacing the SL's. Best Regards, Michael
wlaidlaw Posted May 27, 2014 Share #174 Posted May 27, 2014 Michael, I was going on an article written many years ago (about 20 I think) by Erwin Puts. His thoughts were that the M line may have reached its apogee of craftsman skill and cost no object manufacturing with the M4. I certainly know that the M6 TTL I had later, did not wind on anything like as smoothly as my M4 does and was less reliable, with the film counter failing and then wind on jamming. In getting on for 50 years, my M4 has never given any problems other than a suspicion of a slight light leak from a dented rear door, now cured. Guest Ansel_Adams Posted June 14, 2014 Share #178 Posted June 14, 2014 I am very impressed by how much nicer the M4 is to use/operate compared to the M6. Finder is much clearer and easier to focus and overall fit and finish is on another level. This is the nicest camera I have ever had the pleasure of owning, and I have owned a few cameras over the years (Leica M6, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Hasselblad 500 CM, Pentax, Cannon, etc.). bocaburger Posted June 14, 2014 Share #179 Posted June 14, 2014 I have had all of Leica's M models from M3 to M7 and MP (except the M1, MD, MDa) and some of them in pairs. The only 2 I kept throughout all the years, and still own, are my 2 M4 bodies. CLA'd by DAG a few years ago for the first time since new. The M4 was always to me the highpoint in M cameras.

Indeed it is! For me it has all the features I want and nothing I don't. Top of the line. Just holding it in your hand feels great :-)
