Digilux 2

Just broke down and bought a Digilux 2 for $650 including 3 batteries and 5 filters . What I really don't need would be the filters, however, just the same happy to get... I had been contemplating for some time if I really needed the Digilux 2, but after reading Thorsten's great article, I couldn't resist. I think this will complement the M-9 which I have been using for most of my shooting. According to many, it's amazing what this little Digilux 2 is capable of doing.

Looking forward to trying it myself

Best Regards,

Hank

Congratulations, Hank!

It's a good camera with just the right set of features. I use mine far too seldom, but every time I do, I find out again just how good it is.

I think you're going to like it. :)

Good for you, Hank!:)

Don't be put off by the D2 taking its sweet time to write photos to the SD card, which will take several seconds for each raw file. Many of us stick to shooting jpegs except for those special shots where you've got the opportunity to switch back to raw and for the D2 to take its time.

Pete.

Hank, congratulations! A good buy! If it hasn't had its sensor replaced, I believe Leica still honour the original warranty for the sensor.

Although no longer my main digital camera, the D2 still gets used very frequently because I simply love using it. No other digital camera handles so well, in my opinion. Unless I need greater depth of field, my D2 has f/2 set for all shooting and that lens is rather special. Along with many users, I regret Leica not upgrading it with a similar body shape and lens.

Hello Hank,

Congratulation to your Digilux 2. You will not be disappointed. I also think the sensor is still under warranty.

The classical handling of that cam is really wonderful.

Maybe you nkow that compendium: http://www.overgaard.dk/pdf/Digilux_Field_Guide.pdf

Very recommendable.

About the pics: to shoot in RAW brings no advantage with Digilux 2. That camera does really wonderful JPG images. And the writing to the card is really ok. I recommend 2 GB cards (no SDHC!).

Also look here at the thread "does Digilu2 2 pictures have a distinctive look?"

I think YES :)

welcome to the Cult of the D2 :p

it is a wonderful camera . . . it's almost a religious event when i take it off the shelf and point it at someone . . . if i bring some other camera with me, my wife will always comment "why didn't you bring that red Leica with you?"

have a ball with it !

Sorry Dave... I just noticed you already discovered me on the "Digilux Monster" thread... the thread that's a Forum within a forum. LOL

Thanks,

John, I did see that and commented in the other thread . . . you outgunned me with that beautiful matching strap (i have a slightly mismatched - due to my error - Luigi wrist strap).

actually, i noticed that my D2 takes much much nicer photos now that it's clad in red leather :D . . . I kind of feel sorry for all those poor folks with, you know, factory - issue black :p

Thank you all for your informative comments. Won't be getting my Digilux for a few more days. Then I will be able to have a go with it looking forward. When I get it I'll check to see which filters were sent . I do know that he mention that a polarizer was one of of them for sure.

Will check in to find who else is shooting with this little gem of a camera.

Best regards,

Hank

The EVF is talked about as not being as helpful as it could have been.

Manual focused through the EVF. Straight from the DL2. 90mm F2.4.

I do have a fair number of misses, would have liked a red dot in focus indicator on manual focus.

Otherwise from having used Fuji S9500 Minolta A200 Panasonic FZ50 bridge cams, it has the best EVF of the lot.

  • 4 months later...

Just bought a Digilux 2 yesterday at a bargain price, advertised on an obscure bargain page website. It cost me £250.00 - I think it was a steal!!

First impressions!... It reminded me of using my old Fed camera and the things I miss about film cameras. I am a novice and own a Canon 400d with an array of lenses which I hoped would inspire me to develop my camera skills, but it didn't get me excited about photography like the old days of film.

The Digilux 2 from the moment I picked it up got me hooked again. I now get the same buzz I had all those years ago. The simplicity and control I get from this camera is worth sacrificing the extra Mgp and I find it much more rewarding when I get good shots as I am not spending 5 mins scrolling through menus and presets and giving myself a headache working a camera like a computer.

Admittedly it does have its constraints and you have to work within its comfort zone but to me that is part of its appeal.

From the off it delivered great results with me back in the driving seat. I hope this camera wasn't a one off and that more like this are produced.

Hank -

Congradulations. My D2 comes with me every day to and from work, as well as most other times, providing me with fine quality gear to catch those serendipitous moments. It also comes along on vacations, along with it's big brother (R8/DMR). I'm certain you'll love it once you get used to is strengths and weaknesses.

We all love the handling and jpeg output of the D2..

However, my only problem with the D2 is that i often reach for that 'wind lever' to get to the next frame and than I notice that I am using digital... It is that good i suppose if it makes you do that? ;)
