EVF for M9

Baby... bathwater.

All this speculation is fine but it rides roughshod over one of the most significant benefits of the M viewfinder; one that has yet to be equalled by any SLR, DSLR or EVF... Looking through an M viewfinder there is less clutter, electronics or mirrors between my eyeball and my subject than in any other viewfinder/focussing mechanism.

Combine that with the ability to have the same view regardless of the lens or indeed it's aperture, and the value of being able to see what lies outside the field of view of your lens and that is why I use an M Leica.

You can take your EVFs and shove them... On the accessory shoe of something else. ;)

Regards,

Bill

not true. Most system SLRs and presumably some TLRs can be equipped with plain ground glasses. If it's to be still more uncluttered, you'll have to resort to wire frame viewfinders. They're quite nice, too.

But as Bill says, they do use mirrors and are reversed (TLR), not as bright, and affected by the aperture of the lens in front of them.

The RF in an M type camera does use mirrors. Also, it shows framelines and some even show exposure meters. All cluttered. :D

Let me say first of all; there is absolutely nothing wrong with liking cameras with optical viewfinder, whether it is the range finder or (D) SLR type.

Today, without question, I prefer the same thing myself.:):)

However, there is currently a remarkable stalemate regarding release of new system cameras from all manufacturers.

When asked if they plan new EVIL systems, everyone has the same cryptic answers; maybe, maybe not.

It will come when, and if the market is mature for these technological solutions.

It may seem like something going on, and when these new systems come, they come as a tsunami.

On the new fighter plane F-35, there is now built-in sensor technology, which enables for pilots to see the terrain they fly over, in real-time, with quite simply to look between their legs.

There is no reason not to believe that we within a few years will also have very good electronic viewfinders, at reasonable price, in our digital system cameras.

But none of these system cameras will be called Leica M.

The optical range/viewfinder is a masterpiece in its own right. It is a model of clarity and precision. Although versions with fewer framelines are better IMO. I would much prefer it to a clutter-laden EVF that has a tendency to freeze or slow down in low light or a black out or misbehave in bright light, like an LCD. Sean Reid at http://www.reidreviews.com has a detailed report on EVFs in his D-Lux 5 review. You could add an EVF to the M9 but it would no longer be an M.

There are a few mirrors and prisms in the M view/rangefinder.

Now Bill tell us how you really feel.

when you look through an optical viewfinder everything is in focus, when you look through an EVF that's not the case. An EVF is far closer to an SLR than a rangefinder!

Those are just optional EVFs, they will become better and better and nobody will be forced to use them so i don't see the least problem personally. The question is not to know if but when an M will have an optional EVF imho. YMMV.

Probably never, but certainly not as long as it has a CCD sensor. Technically impossible. Well, if one would introduce in-camera liquid Nitrogen cooling maybe..;)p)

The first chance of that seems to be when back-illuminated full-frame sensors are possible. And nobody knows if they will be as good as CCD sensors.
