fotografr Posted July 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I shot this portrait as a favor and he gave me a free guitar lesson (which did me no good at all). M6, 35mm lux, Tri-X, scanned from print.

stuny Posted July 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2006 Brent - Terrific pose that I believe really captures the guitarist's manner. Exposure, framing, light and tones all right on, too.
andybarton Posted July 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2006 Just the ONE lesson, Brent? I'd demand a whole semester's worth for a photograph like that... (Off to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers tomorrow night - might learn something about guitar playing there... )
mgcd Posted July 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2006 I just love this image! You captured him with great intensity and that works so very well. Just one nitpick, do I detect a somewhat overdone dodging halo?
gverdon Posted July 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 11, 2006 Strong! Did he learn something with you? Gérald

fotografr Posted July 11, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted July 11, 2006 Thanks for looking and commenting. Andy--That's going to be a good one for sure. But don't eat too many of those hot peppers. Conrad--Yeah, I just can't stop myself sometimes.

tomparis Posted July 12, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 12, 2006 Nice picture. Two things: I miss some texture in the shirt. The print could be enhanced in that area (and yes, the dodging/burning is too evident). And the fact he is standing immediately in front on an armchair is a bit strange. Looks like he was sitting and has stood up just for the picture. Do you have a picture of him sitting there? Thomas
semrich Posted July 12, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 12, 2006 To me this shot conveys a strong sense of possessiveness with the stern look and the body language in the way that he holds the guitar. The strong contrast adds to the effect. Richard
Guest evita Posted July 12, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 12, 2006 hello Brent, interesting face! not sure about the pose, to me the crop is either too tight, would love to see more, like it is he fits nicely in the frame. just my 2 cents. abd some texture in the shirt would be good too. Guest imported_stefan_r Posted July 12, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 12, 2006 interesting man, the crossing arm, the watch and the blowen highlights (shirt) are are a pity, also he could have more light in his yes, since his shirt has too much light, the eyes look very dark. regards
fotografr Posted July 12, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted July 12, 2006 Thanks for the additional comments and valid criticisms. The blown highlights are more the result of my not-so-good flatbed scanner than poor darkroom work. The actual print has good detail in the white areas but I lost it when making the scan. Yes, the burn is definitely not good in this print, so I'll have to make another one to give the guitar teacher.

telewatt Posted July 12, 2006 Share #16 Posted July 12, 2006 Great picture!...with little "technical" problems in printing......the print is to hart for me..loosing the highlights a little bit.....and the "highlights" behind the head....but the picture on the film is realy impressiv!.. regards, Jan
