geotrupede Posted January 5, 2013 Share #41 Â Posted January 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Notman, Jaques, a quick question. Seems like the lens got better with the most recent firmware corrections for the 21mm Leica. Is this the case? Or cornerfix is still needed? Thanks, G
Advertisement Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Hi geotrupede, Take a look here CV 21mm F4 Color Skopar on Leica M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted January 5, 2013 Share #42 Â Posted January 5, 2013 Depends on how critical you are. I use it without cornerfix, and would never notice the slight coloration on most photos - although the histogram says it is slightly there. However, I've learned to shoot at ISO 160 with this lens, where the M9 edge corrections have the best effect.
geotrupede Posted January 6, 2013 Share #43 Â Posted January 6, 2013 Tom, thanks for the quick reply. Do you know of an example that I could look at? I am interested in the worst case so to get used to the idea :-) Thanks G
jaques Posted January 6, 2013 Share #44 Â Posted January 6, 2013 i havn't used the lens for a hwile so couldn't say- the sample I posted here has no cornerfix- and the red edge is very subtle even in the blue sky. It is there but is not very annoying. For many subjects it really doesn't matter at all in my experience- skies are generally the biggest problem. Â I will use this opportunity to get the lens out and give it another whirl...
Ecar Posted January 6, 2013 Share #45  Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) See below. As nasty as it gets. Note how the red ege effect is asymmetrical (left edge affected more than left one). This was with an old firmare version. I believe a subsequent fw release has improved things but, like Jaques, I haven't been using this lens for a while now.  Welcome, dear visitor! Tonki-M Posted January 9, 2013 Share #46 Â Posted January 9, 2013 i've just bought one to try out the 21mm focal length. At first, i would have been content with this lens had the problems are not so problematic. the red edge is quite bad (i'm on the 1.176 firmware and code it as the 21 pre asph.) even with the usage of corner-fix(another step that i'm not fond of), the red edge is still present. night photo or long exposure shots are even more problematic...not as fixable or tolerable. but thx to this lens, i've grown fond of the 21mm focal length, and will sell it for the super-elmar in the very near future..

Curious - as I also run 1.176 and don't have this issue. What ISO are you using? The firmware correction for red-edge is more effective at low ISO, and I've learned to only use 160 with this lens (or 400 in a pinch).
lct Posted January 9, 2013 Share #48 Â Posted January 9, 2013 ...i'm on the 1.176 firmware and code it as the 21 pre asph... This coding is one of the worst on my M8.2. I prefer codes 3 and 51 so far but i don't know how they work on the M9. On the M8.2, see M8 codings - lctphot's Photos. FWIW.

the shots that made me disappointed in the lens were mostly on ISO200 and 400. my first time with the lens, i had it on tripod for long exposure shots (ISO 200 4sec shutter, i believe). exposure was correct, but colors in the corner was still intolerable especially when i try boosting saturation in LR4; the corner was just not acceptable. tried it again in day light with blue sky, the problem is still there, but much more tolerable. this little lens is quite nice for b/w for it negates the problem entirely, and i really do enjoy its small size. Ko.Fe. Posted July 29, 2020 Share #50  Posted July 29, 2020 2020 update. I had Russar VF for years, but it took me years to get this lens under low price. I use it on M-E 220 (replaced sensor, latest fw) with selected 21 2.8. Welcome, dear visitor!
