Can the M8.2 sensor be replaced by the M9 sensor?

Dear Forum members,

I finally came to terms with the fact that the M8/ 8.2 is not doing justice to my lenses and the crop factor is really getting to me. However I have developed a sort of attachment to my camera(I am sure some of you feel the same about your peeping boxes:)) and which makes me hesitant to sell it and buy M9.

Also, with the Fujifilm X100 introduced at Photokina, it provokes Leica to rise to the challenge of the EVIL technology. I am sure Leica has planned a lot for the M10, thus raising doubts if this really is a correct time to buy the M9.

So, I was wondering if the M8.2 sensor can be replaced with the M9 sensor and filmware. Is this technologically possible? I am hoping it would be cheaper than buying M9.

Would like to hear your thoughts.

Happy clicks and cheers!!

I think that the hipotetical "upgrade" would require such a complex deassembly-reassembly process, with so many new electronic parts, that, with the due warranty taken into account, would make it nonsense in economical terms.

Even the bodyshells are different to accomodate the different internal layout....

Yes, and:

IIRC, the lens mount is also shifted about 3-5mm to give room for the battery; Mark Norton was right in that there was no way to get the full frame sensor into the M8 body because of this interference caused by the battery area.

Jaap--

Accepted. But wasn't that resolved as a matter of tolerances? RRS intended to make a tighter fit, but chose a small M8 for their initial dimensions.

The published dimensions of the M8 and M9 are the same according to Leica. A number of people have reported moving their Leica M8 grips to M9's.

And I think that in the Reichmann interview, Stefan said the body is unchanged, though I'd have to check that.

I wish they would be able to put the M9 sensor and electronic into a MP or M6 body... ;)

I don't. If the M6 it would mean the forum would be flooded with complaints about the zinc top plates. As it is, shift the M9/M8 to manual and it IS an M6 in all relevant aspects.

Not exactly, thats why I have those dreams. :o

Concretely, I have

- the shutter lag

- the shutter sound and

- the size of the camera body

in my mind.

I know, it is just a dream and somewhat off topic here. ;)
