amod Posted October 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear Forum members, I finally came to terms with the fact that the M8/ 8.2 is not doing justice to my lenses and the crop factor is really getting to me. However I have developed a sort of attachment to my camera(I am sure some of you feel the same about your peeping boxes:)) and which makes me hesitant to sell it and buy M9. Also, with the Fujifilm X100 introduced at Photokina, it provokes Leica to rise to the challenge of the EVIL technology. I am sure Leica has planned a lot for the M10, thus raising doubts if this really is a correct time to buy the M9. So, I was wondering if the M8.2 sensor can be replaced with the M9 sensor and filmware. Is this technologically possible? I am hoping it would be cheaper than buying M9. Would like to hear your thoughts. Happy clicks and cheers!! Amod

cbretteville Posted October 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2010 Amod, The short answer is: No. It will be that because Leica will not do it for obvious reasons. Carl
luigi bertolotti Posted October 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2010 I think that the hipotetical "upgrade" would require such a complex deassembly-reassembly process, with so many new electronic parts, that, with the due warranty taken into account, would make it nonsense in economical terms. Dan States Posted October 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2010 Get an M9. Trade the shutter knob and the bottom plate from your old camera. Pretend it's the same. Mission accomplished.
beaudoin Posted November 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 2, 2010 Like you intimate ... Wait for the M10 to get an M9.

Yes, and: IIRC, the lens mount is also shifted about 3-5mm to give room for the battery; Mark Norton was right in that there was no way to get the full frame sensor into the M8 body because of this interference caused by the battery area. jaapv Posted November 2, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2010 No, the lens mount is not shifted. The cameraleather is identical for both cameras.
cookedart Posted November 3, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 3, 2010 I imagine the shutter mechanism would be entirely different as well.
Dan States Posted November 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted November 3, 2010 Actually, according to Leica, its the same shutter...in fact its the shutter from the R8!
ho_co Posted November 3, 2010 Share #11 Posted November 3, 2010 Jaap, are you sure the body shells differ? I didn't think so, but until we can get Mark Norton involved, I don't think we'll know for sure.
jaapv Posted November 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 3, 2010 Yes - see the problems RRS had making the bottomplate fit.
Guest nafpie Posted November 3, 2010 Share #13 Posted November 3, 2010 Would like to hear your thoughts. I wish they would be able to put the M9 sensor and electronic into a MP or M6 body... Stefan
ho_co Posted November 3, 2010 Share #14 Posted November 3, 2010 Jaap-- Accepted. But wasn't that resolved as a matter of tolerances? RRS intended to make a tighter fit, but chose a small M8 for their initial dimensions. The published dimensions of the M8 and M9 are the same according to Leica. A number of people have reported moving their Leica M8 grips to M9's. And I think that in the Reichmann interview, Stefan said the body is unchanged, though I'd have to check that. jaapv Posted November 3, 2010 Share #15 Posted November 3, 2010 Yes Howard, but it shows that the M9 shells are a new production item.
jaapv Posted November 3, 2010 Share #16 Posted November 3, 2010 I wish they would be able to put the M9 sensor and electronic into a MP or M6 body... Stefan I don't. If the M6 it would mean the forum would be flooded with complaints about the zinc top plates. As it is, shift the M9/M8 to manual and it IS an M6 in all relevant aspects. ho_co Posted November 3, 2010 Share #18 Posted November 3, 2010 ... it shows that the M9 shells are a new production item. I'm not sure that follows. As I said above, I'm just curious.
Guest nafpie Posted November 3, 2010 Share #19 Posted November 3, 2010 As it is, shift the M9/M8 to manual and it IS an M6 in all relevant aspects. Not exactly, thats why I have those dreams. Concretely, I have - the shutter lag - the shutter sound and - the size of the camera body in my mind. I know, it is just a dream and somewhat off topic here.
