My thanks to all as well

I got there too late for dinner and the Saturday challenge (due to French general strike), but had a few drinks with some on Sat night and it was good to cath up. I was allowed to do my 2 hours the following day, which given the horizontal rain and strong winds was 'interesting'

I wasn't sure if I would do this again, but when I was told Palermo, a city I have always wanted to go to, I decided for sure I will come, and my partner is coming too and will enter as well. Please don't change it now. Palermo is such an interesting city, and I have never had a chance to go there before. Perhaps because it is a bit more difficult to get to than usual. But this provides a great reason for going, and if it means having to spend 4/5 days in Sicily then that is even better.

Ciuld always have it in a 'safer' 'easier' city next year, and then the year after choose somewhere less visited or more exotic. Keeps it interesting

First of all, thanks for the positive feedback on the Venice challenge. Andy did the hardest part, the dinner a big thanks to him for that.

I would like make a general comment on travel to the One Challenge. While I want this to be as quickly traveled and reasonably prized as it can, I can not expect it to be or demand that it is. For the five Challenges the Mrs and I have attended (2006-2010) we were only able to get tickets on a low fare airline and a direct route once, that was to Krakow. For three of the other four we have had to do a transfer in Copenhagen or Frankfurt. We still wanted to come so we accepted both the cost and travel time. When I compare my travels to Erl's three attendances who flies in from Melbourne (even if he combines it with other activities) I bow my head in admiration for his commitment.

Keeping in mind that this is an international event with a varying location I cannot expect the venue to be at the end of a route that gives me the best possible deal every year, so I don't. The Mrs and I decide how badly want to come and then we either take the travel time and expense or we stay at home.

I have been asked to disclose the second round in the vote that was done Saturday.

1: Palermo, 17 votes

2: Prague, 15 votes

3. Barcelona, 4 votes

I'm not 100% sure of the count for Barcelona but it was a significantly lower then the other two. I have the exact figure at home.

I'll second that. If the poll set-up by Andy decides on another city, I'll give it my best effort to take part wherever that may be.

Affaire à suivre!

Fine with me - I take it as it comes.

+1 :)

If there were voters, who forgot later, I'll do my best to attend wherever it may be and refrain from voting. But if Palermo stays on, I'll search for notes about restaurants 20 years ago.

Prague we could share a train ride with people flying into Frankfurt and Lisboa we allways wanted to see (in October).

As I already did at another place I want to thank you Andy and Carl for your great support to this perfect days in Venice.

I didn't vote for Palermo, but I just started to be happy with that really interesting place to go for making photos.

I do not want to change that, but however, if we vote again I will vote for Palermo this time;)

My initial reaction to the news that the location was "set in stone" was dismay and a touch of annoyance - I had been looking forward to voting as in previous years. Having said that I recognised the reasoning behind it, and that was why I made my earlier possibly impractical(?) suggestion.

I did a bit of research and found that Palermo, at least from London (via Milan), was a reasonably practical destination both flight and cost-wise, and there also seems to be hotels at reasonable prices. As I have never been to Sicily it's a destination that I would relish - and the weather should be good too!

I am pleased that there will now be a poll, but I suspect that some may deliberately vote against Palermo (I will not be among them) which would be a pity.

Sicily is one of the most beautiful places I have seen, I haven't been to Palermo admittedly (except the airport) but the island (and the food) is really impressive. Well worth visting. Nature, volcanos (Etna, Aeolean Islands: Stomboli, Vulcano, Lipari) and a lot of Ancient Greek and Roman culture.

A landscape that has not changed much for the past 2-3000 years. I recall walking past a field with some cows and their water was provided by a stone vessel from Roman times. No-one saw any need to replace it with something more modern. If it works don't fix it.

Admittedly spring I would think is a better time to vist than autumn, spring provides a great display of flowers in the fields. Maybe things become green again in the autumn but in august it is pretty barren.

I fear that there is a theme running through this thread now... We'd only popped in for coffee. Honest.

(Although this is a fantastic bar and well worth visiting if you are ever there again)

Yes, thanks to Andy and Carl for the very well-organised One Challenge in Venice. It was a very pleasant trip, great to see familiar faces again but particularly to see some new faces. A huge thanks to those who had to travel from far away like Erl (Australia) and Anne and Carl (Oslo).

The organisers set the bar very high and made it very challenging for whoever is organising the next One Challenge ... oh, hold on ... :o

Pete.
