enboe Posted October 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) When on vacation, I tend to participate in "camera spotting." After a week at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, I can only report seeing one red dot all week, that being on a D-Lux 4. This is down from the usual 3 or 4 per week on similar trips in similar locations. Lesson received - need to spend more time out taking pictures with our red dots! Enjoy. MPJMP Posted October 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 10, 2010 Since about 1996 or so, I have only come across 5 or 6 fellow Leica users while randomly walking about. At least 4 of those occasions were in Europe and maybe twice in the U.S. That's it. We are a rare breed for sure.
bill Posted October 10, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 10, 2010 Clear evidence that Leica owners holiday in more salubrious resorts... Regards, Bill
earleygallery Posted October 10, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 10, 2010 Maybe enboe should take a trip to Venice soon, that would skew the statistics
andybarton Posted October 10, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 10, 2010 I can confidently predict that there will be 20+ red dots in evidence before the week is out. There will be 30 of us for dinner...
gberger Posted October 11, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A "Generation X" person admired my M7 a while back for being small and unobtrusive (even though I has a24mm f 2.8 attached). But when I happened to take a photo, "Gen X" asked mt why the flash didn't fire! I guess he thought I had a digital point-and-shoot. Red Dot? Didn't enter the conversation. As an aside, how many of you have taken a photo with a film M camera and then had someone immediately ask to see the picture, believing you had a digital compact camera? c.poulton Posted October 11, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 11, 2010 I once had someone ask me how many megapixels my camera had - I was carrying a Leica IIIf at the time!
250swb Posted October 11, 2010 Share #9 Posted October 11, 2010 Enboe, what about all the Leica's you couldn't see because the red dot was covered in stealthy black tape? I'd do a trawl of Flickr because you are probably the central subject in a million pictures by street photographers drawn to Orlando by the tourists! Fotofanatiker Posted October 11, 2010 Share #10 Posted October 11, 2010 A couple of months ago in an elevator here in Dubai a guy pointed at my M9 and asked "what canon is this?"... I've seen a film M in Singapore 3 weeks back and a client also has a M9. That's about it...
aymoon Posted October 11, 2010 Share #11 Posted October 11, 2010 As an aside, how many of you have taken a photo with a film M camera and then had someone immediately ask to see the picture, believing you had a digital compact camera? That happened to me in Egypt. A young boy asked me to take a picture of him with my MP, then ran up to me pleading to see the results
tdtaylor Posted October 11, 2010 Share #12 Posted October 11, 2010 Actually seen an number of red dots in the last several months. As I mentioned several months ago, at Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, a teenager was using a M3 quite seriously. We noticed each other's cameras but said little- no need- I with the M9 and he with the M3 (and meter). Noticed he only had a 50 mm, and I was using a WATE, so I offered him a 28 Elmarit I was carrying. He returned it at the end of the tour, most appreciative. Several more at Baltimore's Inner Harbor this summer-M8s. The rest must have been hiding behind tape or a replacement black dot, which fools everyone
Shootist Posted October 11, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 11, 2010 As an aside, how many of you have taken a photo with a film M camera and then had someone immediately ask to see the picture, believing you had a digital compact camera? I have had people say you are using a film camera when I had my M8 and I've had to say no this is digital. Never have I had any of my M Leica's, Film or digital, been mistaken for a P&S digital. cliffp Posted October 11, 2010 Share #14 Posted October 11, 2010 A year ago I had been agonising about whether to buy a Leica M camera and at the time had never seen one (or any red dot on a camera). I wandered down the road to a local beauty spot and saw someone with a gorgeous looking camera which turned out to be an MP. I asked the guy about it and he generously allowed me to hold it and look through the viewfinder. It was love at first sight - I immediately bought an M7 and M9 when I could get my hands on one. Rick Posted October 11, 2010 Share #15 Posted October 11, 2010 Maybe enboe should take a trip to Venice soon, that would skew the statistics I've only seen 3 Leica's in so many years. One was in a back neighborhood south of the train station in Venice. A French teenager had a M8 and his Dad had a digital Hasselblad of some sort and they were shooting actively when I walked up to talk to them in french. They said nothing back to me and just quickly walked off. By the way, after a few days, Venice starts to look like Disneyland.
Stealth3kpl Posted October 11, 2010 Share #16 Posted October 11, 2010 I saw a Leica M8 owner chatting up a checkout girl at the Canyon Village retail outlet in Yellowstone one week ago. Pete
juergen Posted October 11, 2010 Share #17 Posted October 11, 2010 The red dot doesn't make the difference, it's the result. Unless.... we are snobs Juergen
alexmann Posted October 11, 2010 Share #18 Posted October 11, 2010 A guy waylaid me in Zurich last week. I was the very first person he had seen with an M9 and he just wanted to know all about it. We had a chat and he told me he had an M6. I of course recommended he should use both! Regards Alex
earleygallery Posted October 12, 2010 Share #19 Posted October 12, 2010 I've had a few people ask me about 'the old Leica' I was using, when I've been shooting with my battered Nikon F2. The most comments I've had is when shooting with the lllf. Same thing happens a lot if you own a classic car of some sort.
ho_co Posted October 13, 2010 Share #20 Posted October 13, 2010 At the Houston Foto Fest opening gala three years ago, I carried my M8 over my shoulder. I saw at least three others there. In one case, someone tapped me on the arm, and when I turned around, opened his coat to reveal his M8.
