The young gent with the cap is the fireman (the one who allowed Barbara to shovel coal into the firebox. She was thrilled, showing that the classic Tom Sawyer fence whitewashing strategy still works). The fireman was acting as engineer and trainer that day, and the hatless gent is the apprentice, who also got to shovel coal.
