Leica, I am really disappointed...

Of course, peoples here are Leica funs, we all have at least one of Leica's finest cameras. We were very happy until now, at least myself...

I have been planing a trip to China (after 12 years leaving home) for a long time. I ordered and paid for a M9 on Feb. 9. I have been postponing my departure until my travel agent run out off options. I had to go on June 9 but I do have the M9 yet. My dealer and dear friend in Montreal (on behalf of me) has been contacting with Leica North America. However, the story is to blamed on "the Volcano in Iceland"... Should we accept it?

Yes, I am leaving with my Nikons (digital) + a M7 (would be a heavy bag), but I am really really disappointed with Leica. 9 months after lunching a product, they can NOT delivery the promise...what's the point?

Please do understand my frustration... as a die-hard Leica fun...I hate Leica now (no the cameras)...

Ooookayyyy....

Firstly, I understand your disappointment.

But...

If I read this correctly, you placed an order with a dealer and left him to get on with it. You say he is a "dear friend" but he has been unable to secure a body for you for four months.

Knowing that the M9 body is in short supply and has been since well before you ordered, you "outsourced" your requirement to a single channel.

Let me ask these questions:

- Were you at any point given a delivery date, either by Leica directly or by your dealer on Leica's behalf?

- Did you expect to jump the queue?

- Are you seriously saying that you do not believe that Eyjafjallajökull has impacted Leica's deliveries worldwide?

- You have other camera(s), including an M7?

Yes, I understand your frustration, but...

Regards,

Bill

Don't be a hater. Already have a Leica and an M7 no less, you should be happy :p. And you're going on a trip. Must be nice. Perhaps you should get your priorities in line. It's a camera. Big deal. Why don't you use this opportunity to shoot some film. Film is good. I want a Leica M9 as well. And since waiting to get one, I've really gotten to love the film Leicas. Life goes on without a Leica M9.

I read your message and offer condolences for your frustrations. I would offer up the following option as something to consider.

This is the very last year you will be able to have Kodachrome film processed. The last batch has already been manufactured, and is sold out at most stores, but is readily available on ebay. I picked up 16 rolls for what I am referring to as my "permanent memories" project.

Kodachrome has the wonderful property of not fading, if stored properly, for many, many decades, perhaps as long as a century. I am shooting a roll or two this year at each significant event or location that I wish to document and enjoy for the rest of my life and for the enjoyment of the next two or three generations.

You will likely make more trips to China in your lifetime, and will have access to even more wonderful digital tools for those trips. For this trip, consider taking your M7 only with your full selection of lenses and one or two rolls of Kodachrome per day. Don't take along the digital arsenal lest it be a temptation from your Kodachrome mission.

Enjoy.

European airfreight feels volcano impact - Fruitnet.com

Volcanic Ash In Europe Halts Airfreight In Asia : NPR

Not only does Leica air-freight all cameras to the US, but they also get parts air-freighted in from outside of Europe (Kodak sensors, Seiko shutters). A couple of bumps in the ash cloud density on the wrong days could easily set back production a couple of weeks, and product shipments another couple of weeks.

First off, I would have been frustrated as well. but then I would simply have taken an M8, as I would have taken it as a backup anyway. But why didnt you post on this forum? Im sure an M9 would have been found for you.

I generally don't check on the forum anymore. Seems like all it consists of is posts like this. Lately, I often think on this forum that some of the people with the kind of resources to afford this kind of camera equipment have completely lost perspective on how the world works.

Leica makes these cameras and lenses more or less by hand. They don't have many facilities. Someone in another thread wrote something like, "if Apple could ship 2M iPads in 2 months, why do we still have supply problems on the M9?" Not a lot of intelligence (or common sense) in that comparison.

You could just as easily blame yourself for not anticipating the demand for this camera, ordering in September instead of February (people placing their orders in January were already expecting July delivery). Or for not being more resourceful. Or for not having a contingency plan.

Syccsy, I mean no malice as I write this. After 12 years away from the place you call home, I do hope you realize that there are many cameras capable of capturing what it is you miss and love about that place, and that you have a fabulous trip.

Since you're going to China, swing by Hong Kong and go to Man Shing to pick up an M9. They usually have quite a lot of Leica stock on hand. It's also way cheaper than buying elsewhere. I just picked up a new 18/3.8 SE from there last week for $2250 USD (cheaper than any used 18/3.8 found online). Man Shing is a legit Leica dealer and one of the most reliable camera stores in Hong Kong.

Sorry to hear about the delay and trip issue, but realistically you cannot blame a manufacturer for not producing and making a camera available to you in time for a trip. Leica didn't book the trip and nor did they promise you you'd have it in time, so I think you'll sleep better at night if you just accept that things don't always go your way.

Remember it's not the camera or the final image that's most important. It's the experience of taking the photographs that you should be looking forward to. Give me an instant camera as an only option and I'll certainly enjoy each press of the shutter. With what you already have, you should be very grateful and enjoy it on your trip, regardless.

All the best

I have a fair bit of sympathy for the OP. It must be very frustrating for someone who has has an M9 on order for 4 months to read of others finding M9's sitting on dealers' shelves unsold. I feel that the distribution/allocation has been more than a trifle haphazard. Dealers, distributors or Solms' fault - no real feeling about who is to blame.

I suggested back last September, that the country distributor keep a register supplied by dealers of customers from whom they had taken deposits and Leica would supply in the date order of deposits taken. Now this would only work if dealers did not try to buck the system and I supposed some would.

Sometimes, you have to get your finger out and get it "walking", as Yellow Pages used to say. Relying on one dealer, no matter how good a friend, means that you rely on him or her to find one for you, when, in fact, there may be an unsold example, or a very short waiting list, at another dealer in the next town. Or even the next country.

The fact that many people are now finding M9s, and not having to wait 4 months for them, is testament to the fact that, if you really want something badly enough, it can be found with a bit of perseverence and effort.

But, putting off a holiday trip just because of the lack of a camera is a bit odd, I would say.

"blame"???

How about "blaming" all those people who want to buy the M9?

...or all those dealers who have placed orders without an end-customer in mind?

...or all the people who are on multiple dealer lists?

...or those who wanted black instead of grey?

...or those who have ordered then changed their minds?

For goodness sake - why does everything have to come down to a witch-hunt to find a scapegoat?

Sometimes, just sometimes, it helps to take responsibility for one's own life.

....and sometimes it helps if a company puts a customer orientate distribution strategy in place, once they realised that they had a major seller on their books and people would have to wait while production took place. You may note if you read my post that the strategy I proposed would depend upon the probity of dealers and that I therefore doubted if it could work. It is really a nonsense where someone has waited 4 months and is still without and they are on a dealer's shelf somewhere else. I cannot think of a better way to put people's back up and send them to Canon/Nikon.
