Advertisement Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here M8 Firmware ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Gerard Posted June 3, 2010 Share #162 Posted June 3, 2010 And the M9 is current, the future holds an M10... and so life goes on. Now then... how about we all take a break and head for the thread about old glass?!
jaapv Posted June 3, 2010 Share #163 Posted June 3, 2010 Readers from Leica should see that some users are concern about future of M8 and the company.Sorry - you've lost me completely here. The M8 is a discontinued model without a future and the company is doing just fine, thank you.
SJP Posted June 3, 2010 Share #164 Posted June 3, 2010 Considering that all the previous M8 upgrades have been only marginally relevant (except improved better AWB which sometimes reduces the amount of PP, note sometimes) I fail to see any major benifit from other M8 upgrades. Will I die if I can't have manual lens selection, NO obviously not. Do I need or want manual lens selection, NO I don't. Is SDHC compatibility useful, yes, do I need it NO. SDHC cards seem slightly more reliable than SD's admittedly. Saffire screen - waste of breath More silent shutter - OK as an option, I prefer 1/8000 and a louder shutter Fast ISO setting - non-issue Full-frame OK but it has pro's and con's - is not feasible with the M8 What other upgrades can I think of?........ Nothing much actually. Maybe removing the discrete mode from the firmware or making sure that discrete and continuous mode don't bite each other so badly as now is the case. For me the ultimate digital M is one that has as few embellishments as possible - I want to do the thinking myself. I will be happy to install any future firmware generations and see what benifits this may or may not bring, but I am not holding my breath in eager anticipation. Angelos Viskadourakis Posted June 4, 2010 Share #165 Posted June 4, 2010 The future of the M8 is the M9. really ,i didnt notice at all when i'm using it.M8 is another size sensor-very useful-and M9 is another size ,why we have to compare them,if this old marketing story about the sensor size was true no so many companies would continue passionately producing designing and evolving other sensor size cameras. They do because there are many serious benefits for the photographers.I will write for the M9 in the appropriate forum and for M8 in that forum. No anticipation for anything SJP,just forum needs and ideas and proposals and of course-i totaly agree with you- Less Is More. Angelos Viskadourakis Posted June 4, 2010 Share #166 Posted June 4, 2010 "Hope is not a strategy" Regards, Bill Hello Bill,in the companies i work with-world sellers-they teach me that hope is- if not the only- definitely the strongest strategy that motivates any kind of human evolution-cameras included-probably the only difference between humans and animal kingdom-the other must be greed.I dont hope M8 evolution,i discuss the fact that is time to correct some things that were missing in the hurried process, just a talk.Is related to M8 Ownwers and Users Only. Some are said they dont need much more-me included, some they would love these corrections and some others they declare that if it comes they will benefit, but they dont care much. Some -which obviously are NOT M8 Owners or Users- hate the M8 correction/evolution,go figure. mjh Posted June 4, 2010 Share #167 Posted June 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Some -which obviously are NOT M8 Owners or Users- hate the M8 correction/evolution That is not the impression I was getting. All this talk about your love for the M8 on the one side, but rallying for “corrections” and “evolution” on the other … It is like telling a woman that you love her and no one else, yet insist that she really should see a plastic surgeon about this or that feature of her body that has always been bothering you since the day you first met. That wouldn’t go down so well, would it?

That wouldn’t go down so well, would it? Michael ,on the contrary, you really have to visit Latin America and you will immediately change your sentence,it will go extremely Well.Even with a Divine Beauty. Michael obviously we will divert and humiliate the subject in that route, and having read alot of your excellent posts i dont think that is something you like, should we restart that on the well known "perpetual" think just to bring the same five posters for just shouting and insulting others-boring,done..Bottom line Michael just better to be the one who knows when his firmware needs upgrade than to be like some that sadly believe -through major ignorance-that they got the "SUPESEDED woman" when is not .Very old forum technique,is not working when truths are spoken ,sorry guys(sfokevin, dcoombs).I suppose you are an M8 owner /photographer,do you suggest anything for any possible firmware upgrade for Your M8,so we can offer our feedback-as M8 Owners/Photographers- for some serious engineers,if ever happens. If nothing happens i suppose at least six frequent posters will be very happy.that is already a good did, what about the thousands and thousands of M8 Owners/Photographers???????Is not a good idea to insult each other as is kind of boring, all sides were expressed, all angles are covered, some insulting, but general ok level.i think that the thread has to stop somewhere here, and let life to prove which side was close and which was not, lets talk about lenses and other useful everyday stuff.I expect there will be no need to restart the topic in few months-and yes Hope & Expectation is the ultimate Strategy. john_newell Posted June 4, 2010 Share #172 Posted June 4, 2010 Even Lewis Carroll couldn't figure this one out. I'm outta here. For the record, Angelos, I am an M8 owner, user, and booster/lover. And I don't need new firmware.
Angelos Viskadourakis Posted June 4, 2010 Share #173 Posted June 4, 2010 Me? I'm still on honeymoon. Loving every time I open the bag and see the M8, excited everytime I see the raw files download. Looking forward to the software update - but my experience/ownership will not be lessened if it never arrives. me too.
pgk Posted June 4, 2010 Share #174 Posted June 4, 2010 I think that I have a solution to the problems posed in this post! Anyone really wanting many of the M9 features, as requested, for their M8 could send in their M8 to Leica and ask for their original M8 viewfinder to be fitted into a new M9 bodyshell. So the M8 could in fact be fully 'upgraded' by transferring the viewfinder over. If Leica then fitted a mask over the new sensor to crop it back down to the M8 sensor size it would be more or less what all the people who require a new upgrade want. Admittedly there would be substantial hardware replacement and cost might be a trifle high, but hey, what does money matter in a 'perpetual upgrade' program - you just do what you have to do, right? Can't understand why nobody thought of this before - obvious really:D.

Can't understand why nobody thought of this before - obvious really:D. Great idea Paul.Really impressed, what do you think ,is technically possible????? But you got the timeline reversed, the actual line of events are: 1/ there is an announcement that digital M is not possible because of short flange distance and other tech limitations.(yes same talk had been heard before) Some time later 2/ first digital M appears in the shops. 3/ very shortly is appearing that there is a higher infrared sensitivity 4/immediately everyone is asking what to do with that dead button and why cannot set the iso and Ev from the back(like Digilux 2,or even Clux 1) and have to visit the menu. 5/from day one is announced that all issues will be dealt with. 6/the "perpetual" concept is getting official. 7/everybody dislikes the solution of the lens coding recognition as 100+ euros have to be paid per lens instead of the manual recognition. 8/some -really nice -hardware -evolution happens by listening the clients/Paid,at a deserved but high cost/ 9/wondering why there are only 5 iso settings.Usable 4. 10/latest firmwares and hardware upgrades are creating a strong and agile camera M8. 11/waiting for Leica R10 as everybody is content with M8 and with the feeling that the minor M8 issues will be addressed soon. 12/Waiting for the final M8 fixes.(iso with 1/3 increments,ev change by remapping the useles back button, uncompress Dng) knowledge gathered from the thousands of M photographers. 12:confused:/change in the company leadership, new leadership decides to cancel all announcements from the previous leadership,regardless....... 13/in less than 2&1/2 years instead of the fixes as they were pointed out ,indicated and promised to be addressed, R10 evaporates as program, M8 is not getting the final fixes and something else is introduced. The reverse is that M9 got the things that were created to complete the project M8 and not vice-versa.What is with M9 Paul( i dont need the copy,i prefer the original),i thought this is the M8 forum. Is this the M8 forum or not ? go figure. Τρομερη ιδεα,μπραβο Παυλο.

stunsworth Posted June 4, 2010 Share #177 Posted June 4, 2010 Τρομερη ιδεα,μπραβο Παυλο. Not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but you have to face facts, the chances of their being a major upgrade to the M8 is nil. You might want that upgrade, but it isn't going to happen, and no amount of saying "I want" is going to change that.
