Advertisement Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Hi Dan Bachmann, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DigitalHeMan Posted December 29, 2014 Share #7122 Posted December 29, 2014 Is it a Lincoln Continental (around early 1970s perhaps)? Correct! It's a Lincoln Continental, made by the Ford Motor Company, in either late 70s or early 70s. This one was driving around the streets of Amsterdam, but was in far from showroom condition your turn! stuny Posted December 29, 2014 Share #7123 Posted December 29, 2014 BTW: All the Lincolns in that era (early 1950s into the 2000s) were Continentals, though since then they have added other models, such as the huge Lincoln Navigator SUV. But even the very common Lincoln Town Car was a Continental, and until recently, all the versions of "Mark" were Continentals, too.

wlaidlaw Posted December 30, 2014 Share #7125 Posted December 30, 2014 Columbia Victoria Phaeton? Wilson
Dan Bachmann Posted December 30, 2014 Share #7126 Posted December 30, 2014 It isn't a Columbia, but you are right it is from a brand/company that is no longer in business.

Dan Bachmann Posted January 2, 2015 Share #7128 Posted January 2, 2015 Another clue:
wlaidlaw Posted January 3, 2015 Share #7129 Posted January 3, 2015 It is an electric car (as I guessed with the Columbia Phaeton) but there were so many small makers of electric cars at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, most of whom only assembled a few cars out of proprietary parts (typically either a Siemens, Edison or Brush motor), that I could not begin to guess which of the many it is. Wilson
Dan Bachmann Posted January 3, 2015 Share #7130 Posted January 3, 2015 Yes, you are right that it is electric. It was made in the USA, as was the Columbia and Thomas Edison bought one even though he did not drive. Starts with B.
wlaidlaw Posted January 3, 2015 Share #7131 Posted January 3, 2015 I would guess therefore that it might be a Baker-Brass car. This was an interesting car, in that some models used an Edison Nickel-Iron battery (like the later milk floats) rather than the usual lead-acid. The Nickel-Iron battery although not having quite as high a peak current ability as lead-acid, was much longer lasting. Wilson
Rona!d Posted January 3, 2015 Share #7132 Posted January 3, 2015 Wilson should be right. This is the 1902 Baker of the Toyota Museum in Nagakute/Japan. They have all kinds of interesting cars from all over the world there.
Dan Bachmann Posted January 3, 2015 Share #7133 Posted January 3, 2015 Wilson is indeed correct, so it is over to him for the next car. Ronald was also correct in finding the exact specimen! I'm impressed.
wlaidlaw Posted January 4, 2015 Share #7134 Posted January 4, 2015 Here is your next one. This was on the Scottish Malts Rally last year and was second overall. How it passed the noise test beats me. We came up behind it a couple of times (we were in a different larger engine class) and it was very raucous. Sorry about the pixelated picture but the only photo I could find of it, it was in the background. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! With a clue like that I have to google but the car that came second in 2014 was a Lotus Elan, and that isn't a saloon car..... Is it maybe the Alfa Romeo Giuliani Super that raced in 2012? Rona!d Posted January 4, 2015 Share #7136 Posted January 4, 2015 I´d say this is a Volvo P 1800 ES. Something above 8.000 cars made. A beauty and I missed my chance for getting a good one for a good price (early 1990s).

A beauty and I missed my chance for getting a good one for a good price (early 1990s). Ronald, As you say a Volvo P1800 ES. For some reason these did not sell well in the UK and were a rare sight. People seemed to prefer either the horribly unreliable Reliant Scimitar GTE or the much cheaper but very inferior MGB GT (usually in poo brown with stripey orange upholstery.) We had to have ground sheets down, so we did not drip oil onto the Queen's forecourt at Balmoral. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! Rona!d Posted January 4, 2015 Share #7139 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) Wilson, those were pretty expensive in Europe and build quality of the first Jensen assembled coupes was poor (1961-63). The later "S" models made in Sweden were much better. A lot of cars went to the US, also the later ES shooting brake version. Volvo stopped production when they could no longer export to the US because of the strange safety regulations ("height of the head beams" for example) which killed a lot of European cars around 1973. The D-Jetronic could become a real pain but there are several solutions. Did you know that a retired US teacher still drives his 1966 Coupe and holds a world record in having the most "private" kilometers (in 2013 something close to 5 MILLION kms in total!). Still first engine and gearbox which is unbelievable. We have to keep in mind it´s a "sportscar" and not a Mercedes /8 Diesel Taxi with it´s forth engine ;-) Have to find something to post tomorrow. Photoskeptic Posted January 5, 2015 Share #7140 Posted January 5, 2015 Ronald, I had an early P1800 for college. Biggest headache were the Smith's gauges. You can tell the Jensen built ones by the "cow horn bumpers", although I know of one man who installed them on a 1971 model because he preferred them! I've attached an image of mine - it was a bit tarted up. Welcome, dear visitor!
