Pft........pft.....pft...pft.pt.pft.pft.pft.pt.pft.pft.

Very quiet, indeed! The year before last year I have seen (and listened to) a steam car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Fascinating, really soundless, and an enourmous accelaration...you could compare it to an electric car.

So, with your last hints it was easy: Doble Steam Car.

This was an interesting puzzle, "deep sea diving" into automobil history and engineering - thanks for it!

Cheers, Andreas

PS: Remember - around 1900, steam cars and electric cars outperformed cars driven by gasoline in numbers and performance! The Doble car brother was a late try...

PPS: And last addition, because of "alternative energy" - an arabian minister said sometimes in the 70s: "The stone age doesnt end because of lack of stones." - means: The next screwing-up-the-world invention is maybe quite close...

Never expected that car was a steamer. Andreas, how could you know?

When mentioned it was a "very quit" car, I thought of alternatives to gas, but the common cars shape didn´t tell that.

The only steam car I know from personal experiene, is a Stanley like this one. And no, it was foggy that day at the Nürburgring, not all was steam.

Right you are, Andreas. I chose Doble, not to be difficult but because I always admired the car and it's cranky iconoclastic inventor and CEO, Abner Doble.

for more on Doble,

as well as a gallery,

although there are many other sources for this singular genius and his incredible machine.

Price was nearly $25,000 (nearly $250,000 in today's money) with a custom body, although you could get a running bare chassis for under $10,000.

I have included a number of pictures including Hughes' roadster which he timed in excess of 132mph; this in the 1920's when 100mph in a passenger was considered rare. I read where it would travel 1500 miles on 24 gallons of water and very little kerosene. I also added a picture of the Paxton steam car prototype built in the 1950's; Doble's last hurrah. Typical of Doble, he had a tantrum and walked on the project. Paxton

killed the project. It looks very Studebaker-ish so I guess that Lowey may have done the body design.Whether the steam engine actually ran will have to be answered by other than moi.

Your turn Andreas.
