At least the Daimler Dart/Sp250's head bolts/studs were not at 45º to the block surface, like the Stag's, although the SP250's fragile and spindly cast iron 4 main bearings had a tendency for the middle two to crack. A well sorted Dart/SP250 is a surprisingly quick car. The early ones without the extra stiffening side chassis members were lighter and even faster but had an unfortunate habit, similar to the XK150, of opening their doors unintentionally on long fast high load corners. The driver at least had a steering wheel to hang on to but pre the installation of seatbelts, the unfortunate passengers could suffer the fate of Oddjob in the James Bond DB5's ejector seat.

...this 1975 example (first registered August 1976) has its original and 'fully sorted' engine. I spoke to the owner who advised he bought it 'locally' (Peterborough) but 'EX' = originally registered in Gt Yarmouth...

Thank you, Dunk, and a very attractive example she is too. In my 'youth' I didn't quite go along with the 'T-Bar' roof concept yet now it has acquired a certain classic charm all its own.

OK; "And Now For Something Completely Different".

As yet - although I do have a few good(?) ideas - I have absolutely no "100% sure" notion of what this thing truly is so we will all be working together on this one in terms of discovery!......😸......

Hello Michael!

You are correct with the Panel Van idea. Not, however, from the USA. Date-wise? The model was originally released in the '30s and production finally ceased in 1960.

Good Start!

Another pic?

Opel Olympia Van from around 1937-38?...

Ah! A very good guess, Wilson, and whilst it isn't an Opel Olympia you are very much on the right track.

The patron of the company which manufactured the Mystery Car had been impressed by the Olympia when he came across the car during a trip to Berlin in 1935 and the Opel proved to be a great influence, subsequently, on the design for his 'new model'.

I had been thinking maybe an obscure Renault-style van - but Wilson’s guess reminds me that ivory coloured steering wheels are a common feature somewhere to the east

Ivory steering wheels must also have been popular to the west of Germany, too, Nigel! Might I suggest that you go back to your original thinking?......:)......

I can't find reliable production figures for this vehicle (neither car, estate nor van versions) but they were mass-produced in their thousands.

Rear-view?

Ok - the headlamp treatment is reminiscent of the later 70s Simca “fourgonettes” - I think a neighbour in the Tarn had one in orange…a kind of Renault 4 van but not (as it were)

Could it be a Simca?

You are also thinking along the correct lines, Nigel, and it is a Fourgonette but it isn't a Simca.

Think closer on the rest of your reasoning in both of your latest posts and balance it with the mystery-machine's time-frame as stated in post #23324 and my own second sentence in post #23328...

Full-frontal (to finish?);

Renault Juvaquatre?...

Indeed it is.

No idea from which year it dates and, in fact, until yesterday evening's google trawling through 'French Cars of the 1940's and '50s' I had absolutely no idea what it was myself. I wasn't even sure that it was French!......😸......

It has been sitting outside a florist's shop in a leafy suburb of La Rochelle (where my wife has family) for as long as I can remember and the length of time it is taking for it to succumb to the dreaded tin-worm is, in some way, a testament of the solidity of the fabrication and quality of materials used in its construction.

Interesting vehicle all round. For anyone as unfamiliar as I am with the thing here is the relevant wiki link;

The whole kitten-caboodle to finish off and thanks for playing everyone!

I think I’ve only ever seen the saloon and didn’t realise there was a vanette version…

Hopefully it’s your spell check that “corrected” kit-and-caboodle to a more feline version 😉

No; just my cat-friendly sense of humour coming out to play.

The wife and I are not long returned from a fortnight in France so 'Scrap' and I are spending considerable amounts of time in each other's company catching up with each other's mews news. She is very chatty (quite seriously!) and is clearly having an influence on my thinking...

There are/were the remains of what I always assumed was an Opel Olympia Van in an abandoned quarry near me, that was only reachable on an ATV as the road had deteriorated so much. I assumed it had been left behind by the retreating German Army in 1944, as they had an observation post above the quarry. Given this is in France, it is probably more likely to be a Juvaquatre Fourgonette. The road was completely washed away by the floods of 2010 and had not been repaired as of 2017, when my ATV was stolen.

Just to keep things going and for a bit of fun I can post something else.

Spotted this nippy little runabout when I popped out for some milk this lunchtime and grabbed a few snaps(*). Any and all info as usual;
