Ivan Goriup Posted March 31, 2024 Share #21461 Posted March 31, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Finally got my computer back from the local Apple specialist, and with all the resizing problems I was experiencing fixed I am quite anxious to see if everything works ( as usual, it was all operator error, not an Adobe LR Classic fault ), therefore please allow me to jump in and post this next one. The usual info please JZG Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Advertisement Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 Hi Ivan Goriup, Take a look here Name this car..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted March 31, 2024 Share #21462 Posted March 31, 2024 Let's start with Italy, not the higher end.
NigelG Posted March 31, 2024 Share #21463 Posted March 31, 2024 Well it’s actually British x 2 IMHO 😉
wlaidlaw Posted March 31, 2024 Share #21464 Posted March 31, 2024 Marcos? Wilson
Ivan Goriup Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21465 Posted April 1, 2024 Stuart, NO, it's not Italian, nor is it a high-end offering. I know it's very risky to ever assume anything, but I'll take the liberty of assuming that NigelG means that 'British x 2' refers to the 2 Brits responsible for creating the Marcos brand in 1959, i.e. Jem March & Frank Costin, the famed aerodynamicist who was closely involved in the design of the DeHaviland Mosquito light bomber, which used an air frame made chiefly of high-grade plywood.... same as Marcos automobiles. Wilson is also correct in speculating that it is a Marcos......in fact, the clue posted above is the headlight of a 1967 Mini-Marcos, first produced in 1965 until 1970, and then again later for several years, and is still available to this day from Marcos Heritage. Not a very attractive or a very good car in my opinion, but it did distinguish itself when in 1966 a Mini-Marcos was the only British car to finish the 24 Hours of Le Mans ( in 15th place ). I usually show a rear view (if I have an image) but in this case did not post one since it's by far the the worst aspect of what I believe to be a truly awkward little car. Thanks for participating. stuny Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21467 Posted April 1, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wonderfully photographed, but probably the least attractive car you've ever posted. The one Marcos I've seen was far better looking than this model.
NigelG Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21468 Posted April 1, 2024 JZG - I called it British x 2 not actually because of March + Costin but the fact that it has Mini running gear beneath the Marcos body so as per Stuart's post it was effectively not just "not Italian" but effectively 2 British marques in one (at the time obv.) I had assumed it was a mark IV from around 1966 based on the blackouts on the lamp covers - I think they vary in size as the series progress but I'm not an expert on these frankly IMHO hideous models. I can never get my head around the fact that the company that designed the 1968 Mantis XP made so many ugly cars (including the production Mantis M70 of 1970 that looks like a poor schoolboy drawing made real) but hey I own a Bristol and their design/styling absolutely fell off a cliff after the 411 Mk 2. https://www.marcosheritage.com/marocmantisxp
wlaidlaw Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21469 Posted April 1, 2024 (edited) In 2005 the bodyshell of my 1430cc very hot "Big Bore" 1985 Mini Cooper S reached the end of its life, when a front sub frame failure and corrosion of the floor pan, caused the bodyshell to split longitudinally from the front sub frame mount under the engine to just in front of the rear seat mounting. I was quoted £6000 to "re-shell" the car, which would then only be worth about £4000. I therefore bought a "kit" of parts that the then owners of the Mini-Midas company had been going to restore to the original factory built 1979 Mini Midas race car. I bought it with the intention of making a historic race car, using the Cooper S mechanicals. I was assured that the 6 boxes had all the Midas parts other than the rear axle. I purchased the last unused original monocoque Midas beam rear axle and new brakes all round plus new Spax struts, new radiator and a whole lot of other parts. I got as far as making a braked rolling chassis with my 130BHP motor and CR gearbox installed but then found that many smaller parts including most of the interior, pedal linkages, etc were missing or were not the correct Midas parts. FIA/FIVA then told me that they would only permit this car to race as a 997cc long stroke engine car, with original Mini Cooper size brakes and 10 inch diameter wheels and not with the 1430cc engine (nor if I de-stroked the engine to a ultra short stroke high revving 970cc Cooper S) 4 pot ventilated discs all round and the 13" Minilites I had off my Cooper S. This apparently was on the basis that the car would be far too fast and beat cars like Alfa Romeo TZ's etc. This was at same the time I was buying a house in France and gradually I lost enthusiasm and interest in the project and sold everything for just £1000, or less that 1/3rd of what the engine alone had cost and it had only done 4,000 miles from new in the Cooper S bodyshell. The Midas was the successor to the Mini Marcos, usually sold as a kit car but the car I had, had been one of two factory built race cars with a normal V5C registration document rather than a kit car "Q" registration document. Picture below is me collecting the Midas bodyshell from the Midas factory in 2005. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! Graham (G4FUJ) Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21471 Posted April 1, 2024 Modern'ish Aston Martin? DB7? (not that I have anything to post)
Ivan Goriup Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21472 Posted April 1, 2024 I think Graham is correct - to put a finer point on his identification, I believe the sharp crease on top of the front fender behind the headlight fairing is very characteristic of a Zagato body. NigelG Posted April 1, 2024 Share #21473 Posted April 1, 2024 I was hoping we might disappear down a 612 Scaglietti wormhole (my favourite “modern” Ferrari) but that might have been a crop “too far” for the file. Aston is correct but not a DB7
Ivan Goriup Posted April 2, 2024 Share #21474 Posted April 2, 2024 I was thinking more Ferrari 575GTZ, but upon further thought, I think I've chosen the wrong wormhole altogether and it's not Zagato bodied at all...rather, I think we're looking at a very cleverly cropped front corner of a Rapide S sedan. NigelG Posted April 3, 2024 Share #21475 Posted April 3, 2024 Very very close - A slightly wider crop which might help. Welcome, dear visitor! NigelG Posted April 4, 2024 Share #21479 Posted April 4, 2024 (edited) No one quite has it . I’ll put in a wide shot later - suffice to say telling the innumerable models apart - particularly from a couple of years ago - is very tricky!
