Could Jowett be the UK equivalent of Borgward, killed off by their competitors, jealous of their product? I have always found it surprising that one of the other UK manufacturers, in reasonably robust financial health, as many were at that time, from profitable war contracts, did not buy Jowett. That would have only been, if they did not have cars in that class in their range and if they could arrange a new source for the body panels. The obvious purchasers to me would either have been Armstrong Siddeley or Alvis, where the Javelin and Jupiter would have been complimentary to the other cars in their ranges. The Bradford van would not have fitted but that could have been sold on with an engine supply agreement to someone like Reliant, although they were pitifully slow, so maybe just killed off. 

 

Jowett's car business was wound up in 1954, when Ford bought out Briggs Motor Bodies, who made and assembled the bodies for Jowett. The Javelin's chassis and suspension was designed by Dr. Eberan von Eberhorst who designed the final pre-war Auto-Union Grand Prix cars. The business was not well managed plus there were reliability problems on the early Javelins, which did nothing for their sales.

There is a Singer Nine Le Mans around in that intense green colour but the switch gear and ignition key do not look English but more French or German and I doubt if any Singers were made in LHD. Probably not Italian, as virtually all pre-war Italian cars are RHD (in Italy it varied from region to region and in some regions, you drove on one side out in the country and the other in large towns - only in Italy!! The US military authorities imposed driving on the right throughout Italy in 1944/45.)

On second thoughts, it is the bigger one, The Renown

 

 

 

Yes you got it Wilson … it's the bigger Triumph Renown TDC … 75mph and 0-60mph in 30 seconds with its Standard Vanguard engine .

Can I wimp out pro-tem. I have just handed my new MacBook Pro to the UPS man to have its failing keyboard replaced and I am without tools to do things like resizing images to post. Anyone got any mystery car they would like to puzzle us with?

Yep. Too easy :-)

 

Don't see many left on the road nowadays.  Nice car in it's day, especially earlier models from the 70s, but never really liked that gearbox with the long linkages .

The problem with all Italian cars of that period was the noise. The horrible sound of the tin worms eating your car as it was sitting in the drive. I had two Italian cars during the 70's, an Alfetta 1.8 and a Fiat X1/9. They both had holes rusted all the way through within a year from new. The X 1/9 was so bad I got Fiat to agree to buy it back, under threat of going to the motoring press and newspapers. I then bought an ex-demo Saab 99 Turbo, which someone said you could use as a taxi in a salt mine. I did nearly 90,000 miles over the next five years and the sole replacement parts other than regular service, were an exhaust and a water pump seal.

very funny, but "tin worms" are fake news! The metal used in such cars was AUTOPHAGY which is the 1970s Italian word for automobile ;-)

 

p.s. I remember a friend asking me if I could assist replacing the rear shocks of his old GTV, I kept 2 mtr distance in the dangerous moments. Never trusted the soso looking cars corrosion condition. As if the GTV wasn´t enough, his second car was an X 1/9. I never took the chance to borrow that one, not even for a quick ride around the workshop. The FIAT Uno of my ex-GF was warning enough.
