I have what I think will be a real puzzler for you all but I need to copy some old photographs and I prefer to do that in natural light, so it will be tomorrow. I had to look this one up in Georgano's Encyclopaedia of the Automobile.

So team - here is your next one. This one is I think, so fiendish, that I am showing you the whole front of the car and even the engine. The engine is not what it seems - look at the inlet manifolds very carefully. I hope you will all agree with me what a pretty car this is (cough cough).

I thought you might be interested in seeing my document copying set up used to make the above images, as this mirrors what if all goes as planned (it won't - Murphy's Law will intervene), will be the set up I will be using at the end of next week with the New M in place of the Olympus EP-2. I am using a Novoflex LTM Bellows, as unlike the Leica Bellows, it can be fitted straight onto the front of an M body (the guide rail on the Leica Bellows prevents it fitting). I have a pair of the now very rare Novoflex lens adapters, to fit Elmar 65 and Tele-Elmar 135 heads in two positions - surface mounted and recessed (LEIEL and LEIMAR). The focus precision with the zoom and live view is amazing, compared with a Visoflex and 5X chimney viewer, especially with the micrometer adjustment on the Novoflex (the knurled knob at the bottom of the square guide rod). I do quite a bit of document copying and am really looking forward to my M arriving.

This is an "Hera" (sorry am too stupid to type an "accent aigu" above the "e" on my ipad). The makers must have known about that so they called the car "Dolo" which I can type better. It's the model JB 10, a double seater with a 592 cc, 23 hp aircooled boxer. They also planned an JB 20 with a doubled engine, so 8 cyl., 1200 cc, but not sure if they ever made one.

p.s. Haven't googled that and am pretty surprised it could also be found in the internet. knowing what to google for would have been a challenge though ;)

Ronald,

I should have known I could not stump you for long. It is indeed a Dolo. The engine is only a listed as twin cylinder two stroke but I assume a pair of split twins (Twingles). The gearbox looks like the nightmare of the low torque Cotal Electro/Hydraulic box. They designed this during the war for the small cars they saw being the norm, post war. I have been told, that unlike the pre-war large car gearbox, which used the tried, tested and reliable Wilson pre-selector as its mechanical core, Cotal designed their own innards for the small box and it never worked. Cotal hoped that this would be the gearbox of choice for the Type 68 318cc supercharged "Mini-Bugatti," which other than a few copies of the engine, never materialised.

Below a copy of Dolo's advert from the same old magazine.
