What's the purpose of the car? Transporter of racecars. edit: After Mercedes stopped racing, the original 1954/55 car was used as a promotion car/customers car transporter in the US and test car in Germany. I am not really sure, the replica shown in your photograph was shown to the public in 2001 at the Festival of Speed in the UK. The project of the replica started in the 1990´s when Mercedes thought of a good promotion idea at classic car events.
