Leica x1 vs samsung NX10

Take a look at the new Sony NEX 5, launched today. Interchangeable lens with useable ISO up to 12600. It is smaller than any of the current 4/3 cams but the lens mount is huge. Only time before an E to M mount (E is a new Sony mount) adaptor is available, Sony already launching with Alpha A to E adaptor. The sensor size is the same as X1 (APS -C) but a totally new CMOS 14 mpx sensor.

 

I wonder if Leica are already working on an X2 EVIL to compete?

 

At moment I do not see why Leica has to start working on a X2. (Let them first optimize their production quota of the X1, because lot of us are still waiting for their camera to arrive.)

 

Lets wait till the first photographs of this Sony NEX 5, Samsung NX10 or others start to show up to compare them with those of X1. In the end it are the photos that matter, not the technical features nor the price (keeping in mind that the photographer is the most essential part of the deal).

Unfortunately there are many around here who make early adopters look like laggards. The next shiny thing is the thing for them, because what they have does not give them a buzz anymore.

I would think that most who like the X1 won't like this sony. It seems worse than most Japanese cameras, unless I'm missing something, with regard to lack of dedicated controls and dials.

I think the Sony looks bloody marvelous. I think X1 market segment is more interested in size, image quality and camera response times than retro dials.

You are right though, we won't really know until the real reviews by "Joe Soap" users. We can all remember that lesson from the early M8 "adopters" as you call them!

 

The sensor is a new design which appears to offer incredible high ISO without serious noise issues. I just wondered if this would be made available to Leica assuming that they would even want it.

 

Personally, although in theory it could take them with an adaptor I just can't see this minute little body taking my heavy A mount Zeiss lenses but I could just see it with M mount lenses. Then I could be interested.

 

Only time will tell.

The body isn't bad...well except for lack of controls, which I believe the Leica community does like since the exist on most cameras Leica makes. Retro? Leica thrives on retro. The thing that bothers me the most is that the lens seems oversized for the body.

Check out the full review on Imaging Resources. The lack of noise at high ISO is amazing. Use the comparator to compare to Samsung NX10 and it is like comparing a high end DSLR to a P&S for IQ.

Knobs = direct control, tactility, feedback.

 

"Retro" = marketing puff

 

Personally, I think it looks imbalanced. Not my cup of tea at all, but then I am not a fan of Sony design in general, with the exception of their rather neat Bluetooth speakers.

Good to hear from you. My reference to "shiny things" was an oblique one to Cat, in Red Dwarf, thus:

...it's the same sort of drooling for new toys that we see here far too often.

Well it wasn't long before Daniel Kennedy mocked up a 35 Lux asph. on this little cam. It is perfectly doable as the LCD magnification is 7x or 15x more than enough for AF. This little set up would make a nice little quality high ISO (if needed) 50mm equiv 1.4. lens set up.

 

At the quality high iso's available the 35 Cron would also be OK together with many other alternative lenses.

To me, it just seems more like its focus is on making movies and P&S style photography. Not that it can't be used for serious photography, but it seems like it is way too minimal in controls to satisfy those who want control. I've seen people, around the interwebs, stating this thing is the X1 killer. Sure, the high ISO is supposedly great, but they just seem too different from each other to even consider them to be in the same class.

Sony makes some really neat stuff. Unfortunately most of those things don't work for long with heavy use, and their repair services are a bad, bad joke. That's too bad, because they could lead the way on a lot of tech ideas.

 

My feeling about the X1, when I first extracted it from the box was, "my gosh, this is beautiful. And it takes good photos too? Bloody marvelous!"

It could well cut into X1 sales but at this point they are so back logged that it may only cut the wait to weeks instead of months:D

 

I surely don't understand their first three choices of lenses...I want a big sensor so I can control depth of field. That's not going to happen with the lenses they have offered so far. A true "pancake" 24mm F2 would have been great. I like my pancake lenses with butter and syrup also, so that would have been even better. Maybe even little strips of bacon along the bottom to nibble on.

 

PS: OOOHHH NOOO!!!! I just read that it has a focal plane shutter and is described as pretty loud by Imaging Resource.....ARRHGG...That's why I hated my GF1! CLACKITY CLACKITY CLACK I just took your picture!

I like that they offered a 24mm equiv as their first lens. At least it is unique in this category. Shit, it even makes it kind of desirable. It would not replace my X1, but I'd use it too.

I have just heard from a trusted Sony long time reviewer that the NEX 5 takes 2 seconds to fire up and a similar time to wake up from it's "sleep" mode. That would make it a no,no for me.

 

I remember my DMR took a long time to fire up from start and also when "waking up". It used to drive me mad and I missed a few shots because of it. My present A900 DSLR is virtually instantaneous on start up and when asleep the slightest pressure on the shutter wakes it up and ready to use instantly. The only shots I lose now are solely down to me not waking up fast enough for the camera!

 

I will therefore pass on this one!
