I'm not a fan of the NX10, but to it's defense, it's actually a lot smaller than it appears. The body size is actually smaller than the Canon EX580 II flash and only slightly taller than the GF1 because of the EVF. I think the DSLR like body is giving people the wrong impression of its size, not sure if it's a good or bad thing.

If the X-1 is a Porsche Boxster, the Samsung is a Toyota Corolla Verso.

Bigger, sloppier, easier to use. But will never excite you.

I am not in the market for an X-1 (waiting for delivery of an M9). But, of the two, I know which one I would choose.

The leica x1 is really a nice camera. But there are some imperfections like the focusing speed is not that fast. I have a baby and some shots will turn out blur. Maybe it is due to selecting spot focusing rather than 9 point focusing. Or maybe I should Try using a different shutter speed. The samsung has so many different accessories to try. Very tempting

Why not go for a small Reflex like a Kx Pentax, or even the beautifull Canon 550, it's not that big and the autofocus is fast, great for baby/kids pictures. On top of it you have nice zooms that allow you to do various compositions.

The X1, like most of Non DSLR, is very slow in it's autofocus (2 or 3 seconds) if you want to master it on fast subjects the learning curve is quite high (learning to work on manual focusing with hyperfocal)

Nevertheless the X1 has a really beautifull lens, actually you recieve a great small camera for the price of the Leica lens ;-)

To be honest, the Samsung actually looks pretty good. I like the 30mm f/2 lens and the APS-C sensor. I heard they are getting schneider lenses soon as well. Based on this, the X1, and the u4/3 stuff, I'd say we are going to start seeing some great new cameras soon. This is only the golden age.

Thank you for your explanation. While Bill makes some valid, if unpalatable, points may I urge you to invest some quality time exploring the X1's focusing characteristics.

The X1 appears to be a simple camera and, in fairness, it can be a simple camera if you forgo its flexibility. I am quite experienced with Leica rangefinder and the Digilux 2 cameras. But even I am having to spend time mastering the most appropriate focusing settings and modes in order to get the best out of the camera, even more so when using an external viewfinder. Taking your 'baby' subject; my first suggestion would be to use the 'Face Detection' mode and see if that simplifies shooting and increases your success rate. Even if that method proves successful, run through the other focusing options just to prove to yourself which of them works best in certain situations. This is just an example of how we can learn to become masters of our equipment and applies to any modern digital camera you care to name.

Sorry if this sounds like 'preaching'. I offer these suggestions purely in the spirit of trying to be helpful.

They are very different beasts.

I attended the Samsung product launch in Singapore in March. This Korean company has fixed its sites on "aggressive growth" and becoming a major world player in all areas of consumer electronics. I hope quality will play a role, too -- they assured me it will. Samsung is proud of the fact that much product design has been done in-house, although the optics (Schneider Kreuznach) are German designs.

Some features seem relatively clear, but the design is very different to the X1. What makes the X1 unique, in my view, is its utter simplicity of operation -- minimal menus and a return to tried and tested dials for aperture and shutter speed, which are light years ahead of the fiddly menu-driven that bedevil just about every other camera now on the market. The X1 is also smaller by a good margin.

As for performance, apart from AF, you really need to compare pictures from each camera.

anybody here plans to buy a Samsung NX10?

A Panasonic GF1 with pancake lens, or a Olympus Pen with smallest lens, seem like logical alternatives to the X1, but of all the directions a person can go off in from the X1, going to bigger and bigger like the Samsung doesn't seem to compute.....

I was thinking of getting the samsung nx10 to replace my x1. What do u guys think?

Take a look at the new Sony NEX 5, launched today. Interchangeable lens with useable ISO up to 12600. It is smaller than any of the current 4/3 cams but the lens mount is huge. Only time before an E to M mount (E is a new Sony mount) adaptor is available, Sony already launching with Alpha A to E adaptor. The sensor size is the same as X1 (APS -C) but a totally new CMOS 14 mpx sensor.

I wonder if Leica are already working on an X2 EVIL to compete?
