While I'm personally dubious that this is a real product, I have to say I'm surprised by how many people evidently don't want it to be true.

The prospect of unwashed barbarians gathering outside the ivory Leica citadel appears to be frightening a few anyway.

Just to address a few of the most obvious points anyway:

Indeed. The server crashed with 47 followers:rolleyes::confused:

- obviously the twitter or blog followers are irrelevant in this context. How many of the visitors posting here are 'followers'? Are you a registered follower Jaap? Apparently you were a visitor to the site - but your visit was somehow 'invisible' to the server presumably?

This is popping up in multiple places but the souce is always the same. A journalist would need more than one corroborated source before giving the story any credibility.

- it would be a classic way to test the public's response. Definitely no manufacturer would want twenty photographers to suddenly come out with comments about a prototype product - but one small leak is like foreplay - get us all wanting more.

However, I do tend to agree with Jaap that leaking actual images at this stage makes it much less likely that this is real. Hints and teases are one thing, but releasing captures from a prototype seems very unlikely indeed.

Anyway, I'm surprised that a serious wedding photographer who also holds lecture tours for Canon would consider a prank like this - if it is supposed to be an April Fools(?) Surely it damages his professional credibility? In any case - call me old-fashioned - but i prefer my April Fools to be on... well, on April Fools Day.

Well, I just cruised as many of the rangefinder fora as I could think of to see if anyone - ANYONE - had seen the images that so many visitors were supposed to have looked at... and apparently no-one has seen them.

So I guess it is a joke.

Now my next question is... anyone think it's funny? :(

In the german forum you already can see it:

[link deleted - seems to wreck the forum layout]

Sorry for the stupid signs which were engraved on the body; I am sure the final version won't show them and don't think Jeff Ascough's testing model has them.

UliWer,

Thanks for the post.

It's fun to watch the video.

I have an ex-KGB friend(who is a trusted camera dealer now) told me that Zorki will announce a new FF digital rangefinder Zorki D7 on the 1st of April (if not this year will be next year or after but definitly 1st of April):D:cool:

... It would be akin to letting the loonies run the asylum if Leica were to announce another product.... So I guess they are quite likely to try it.

:) :) :)

I love the tongue-in-cheek humor, Bob! Don't think it flew by unnoticed. :p

Probably the best take on the matter yet!

Moderator,

There seems to be a technical problem with displaying the previous two posts correctly, at least in my Safari web browser.

K-H.

Right. The link I posted seems to make problems. I wasnt able to add a comment below it. It's o. k. for me, if you delete my post in #65. Sorry for causing trouble.

Read this. That should make it clear that it's just a bad joke. "HCB/Tri-X mode"...

Yes - and the LOOF framelines (FOOL, of course).

What the heck? Is it just me, or has this "Canon-ambassador" lost all credibility for such a puerile and frankly humorless prank? Lamest unApril Fools 'joke' ever.

Quotes from earlier messages...

Bessa/Epson. Hooray! It's a full frame RD2! Thank god I did not upgrade to M9 ...

This will not be a childish and stupid April Fools Day prank...

Surely not. He wouldn't risk his reputation with such a puerile action

No, Jeff is not an attention seeking IDIOT; he's testing something, for sure...

Another thing is that Ascough has set-up a wordpress blog-space for the new camera. No posts there yet - but obviously the manufacturer (whoever it is) is controlling the drip-feed of leaks, in anticipation of the launch

...looks like there is egg on more faces than Jeff's <grin>.

Yup I guess anyone who believed that a photographer who tours and lectures for a major camera-manufacturer wouldn't put his reputation at risk for what is a very, very lame 'joke' does feel rather stupid right now - including me.

And it's not even April 1 yet... :(

Still, interesting to see the frenzy of interest (on other fora mostly) that greeted even the faint possibility that there might possibly be an entry-level M camera for the unwashed masses. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum are very relieved it won't be happening.

Has anyone considered that "HCB/Tri-X" is not the actual name of the mode but just what he's calling the B&W mode?

If we're parsing language, it seems too obviously a giveaway of being a bad joke if he's intent on keeping it up until tomorrow.

The joke is that everybody is thinking it is a joke, but in fact it isn't....:D

The joke is that it is so poorly made that anyone thinks it can't possibly be a joke while in fact it is a joke. :D:D

The only people on this forum that will be relieved if it's a joke are those that just dropped at least 5k on an M9! Oh, and those who only buy Leica Ms to go with their Meisterstücks and Submariners, and thus want the exclusivity of the brand to be preserved at whatever cost.

For everyone else, an affordable, compact, full frame camera from an established Japanese manufacturer is a dream come true.
