For everyone else, an affordable, compact, full frame camera from an established Japanese manufacturer is a dream come true.

 

I will first laugh at it. Then I will positively state that it obviously can't be any good. Then I will look at some sample pix and some reviews. Then I will explain to my wife that she is mistaken and that it's an elderly camera, and that I had waited all those years for exactly this and none other, and that it was a steal at that price.

Perhaps the Contax brand might be revived by its holding company (Kyocera)? The G2 was an 'autofocus' rangefinder after all.

 

One has to take what he says with a pinch of salt, but Ken Rockwell has the following to say on the G2:

 

'The Contax G2 is a joy to use and shoot. It is tight, precise and fast. Autofocus and metering just work, and the film advances quietly and smartly after each shot. I wish the LEICA M9 were this refined. The optics of the Contax G2 are equal or superior to Leica lenses, and far superior to Nikon or Canon lenses.

Part of this is due to the Contax G2's design allowing rear lens elements to get closer to the film plane than in Leica, which allows lens designers more freedom to design better wide lenses, For example, the Contax G Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 has much less distortion than the LEICA ELMARIT-M 21mm f/2.8 ASPH, and both are much better than SLR lenses.'

 

 

'The Contax G system offers seven interchangeable lenses, fast autofocus, autoexposure, TTL light and flash metering, and automatic high-speed film advance and rewind. It was a breakthrough when introduced in the 1990s, and nothing has come close ever since. Leica slept through the whole thing.' :)

real April fools jokes appear on April 1st. Not the week before. The then get exposed the day after.

Due to his sense of humor Jeff might celebrates his birthday sometimes a few days early and sometimes a few days late. And since he's against tradition, he wellcomes the abolition of weddings.

 

Apart for his ridiculous sense of timing

(Was the picture of putting on the rings taken at the jewler's 3 days before? Then who would photograph this part of the ceremony in the church? Not Jeff, one would think, reading here.)

the pictures on his site are just wonderful. He's certainly a great photographer imo.

I have not visited this forum for a few months as I dropped Leica for Canon, and have not regretted it.

 

So when I read about Jeff's twitter message, I immediatly knew of a place where speculation would be happening.... so here I am, enjoying the same old story again LOL

 

Jeff is a serious person, he is now very mature as he has moved onto Canon LOL This does not mean he has not got a good sense of humor.

 

Credibility loss? why? many serious newspapers and medias do April's fools jokes... Do they lose credibility? NO

 

I just think of two options:

 

1- it is a joke. And I say well done to Jeff for his sense of humor.

 

2- it is not a joke and I say. At last some "maybe" serious company doing a MODERN range finder where high ISO are really high, not a laughable 2500 ISO that was born obsolete from 09-09-09, framelines take advantage of modern electronics etc. etc. a camera that does mean available light, same as Leica use to mean, now days a Canon 1000D or a Nikon D3000 has less noise at 2500 ISO than an M8 / M9.... sad, very sad.

 

We'll see....

 

Bye for now, happily going back to my 3 5D MKII bodies.

The framelines and AF are the biggest thing for me. The camera uses a system which the manufacturers call Luminance Optimized Optical Framelines. Basically the framelines alter size depending on focus distance, and they also get brighter or darker depending on the outside light. This makes seeing them a lot easier especially in the dark which was always an issue with standard Rangefinders.

 

Luminance Optimized Optical Framelines = F O O L backwards :D

However, I am fully aware that a lot of people have absolutely no sense of humour, and that some have chastised me for actually having a sense of humour, but alas that is really their problem and not mine.

 

For a long time now, there have been a lot of photographers wanting a camera manufacturer to make an affordable but professional digital rangefinder camera. I know Leica make the M9 but the price point it comes in at is simply unaffordable to many. It is something myself and others have continued to suggest to Canon, as we believe that there is a market for another modern RF camera. The amount of traffic and discussion that has been generated by my attempt at a joke has pricked the conscience of two big players in the camera market that I know of. Hopefully they will see the interest and think about producing something good for us all.

 

It is feasible that the interest that has been generated will go someway towards getting what a lot of people want, and we might just see a new affordable digital rangefinder in the near future (albeit without the HCB/Tri-x mode).

Jeff, you've got it wrong. It's your puerile sense of humour that has been exposed here. Don't blame everybody else for thinking that you've behaved like a spoilt kid.

 

It wasn't funny at all, IMO. It was silly and even as silly, it wasn't good, not even for that retirement resort of St Annes.

 

Nor does anyone else have a problem if they don't find you being funny. Life goes on beyond Jeff Ascough, if you haven't noticed.
