I realize the iPad is still be criticized by skeptics, which is fine. But today, the iBook application was updated to allow the use of pdfs. While hardly sexy, I now have my Leica and other camera manuals on my iPad. I probably wouldn't travel with the hard copy and would just gut it out, but it is nice to now have the reference material readily accessible wherever I travel.

Give it time.

Multiple email delete is available since iPhone OS 2.0 (aka iOS 2.0), date March 6th 2008.

My bad... I was actually thinking of the in-ability to mark all inbox emails as having been read.

None the less, it's shocking that Apple didn't have a multiple email delete function in OS 1.0.

Hi There

The iPad uses the embedded jpg in the DNG files (rather than the file itself). If you want to see decent representations of the pictures on the iPAD you'll need to shoot RAW+DNG - no way around it I'm afraid . . . . However, if you do that it works very well, and you can choose whether to import DNG or JPG or Both in Aperture or Lightroom

I hope this helps.

Or rather DNG & JPEG basic. No need to use JPG fine.

Jono, how can I shoot RAW + DNG?

And on another note, does this thread belong in the M9 Forum?

He meant DNG +Jpeg.

Thank you.

However, you should also note that by shooting both Raw and Jpeg, the camera slows a bit to write and code those Jpegs. The camera is a lot faster when you only shoot Raw, so you gotta decide if you really need that ipad connection now, or wait to transfer them later, or Apple to issue a OS update.

Interesting point. Is it Apple offering an OS update . . . or is it Leica putting better jpgs in the DNG files. RAW files from other cameras do very nicely without shooting jpg as well - for me both the Sony A900 and the Olympus EP2 give good pictures without shooting RAW+jpg (there, I got it right that time :)

. . . . Actually, thinking about it, it may be that the embedded jpgs are too good - I know there is a 3mb (about) limit to the size of file the iPAD will display.

Actually I have a somewhat different experience.

Yes, it is a mess, all the files in one drawer.. sure.

But when I stick the iPad in the cradle Lightroom launches, and offers to import all the new files to dated folders... done.. and offers to delete them after import. easy and fast.

So as far as I am concerned, YES the iPad can work as a travel device for a shorter trip. possible also for a longer.

I was very pleasantly surprised how quickly the iPad loaded uncompressed DNG's and JPEG fine from the M9's card. I had thought it was going to be painfully slow but it was just fine. Nice little portable device for sorting the day's take when on a trip, when you want minimum baggage.

The only problem I had is that I could not get it to log on to various hotel's WiFi systems, which have a user name and password. After selecting the network, you get to a page that I am guessing is in Safari, enter the two items but then nothing happens. When you go back to system preferences, the WiFi indicator on the top of the screen has disappeared.

Other than that, for a travel device, the iPad has exceeded my expectations. My only desire would be for a matt screen to reduce reflections. I have put on a so called, non-reflective, TeckNet protective screen - a waste of time and money IMHO.

Ofcourse the ipad is going to be proven an amazingly device, one with the potential to change computing from the ground up.

However, Andy, the iphone is not just another phone. The iphone can also carry a substantial amount of photos, and it's got that superb screen. It can help immensely with that display, colour gamut and resolution. And the iphone is also more portable than anything else. I would love to see the camera kit work for the iphone too.

I know. I am on my second iPhone.

But to expect a mobile phone, no matter how "smart" to be able to decode RAW files from any number of different manufacturers in a manner acceptable to the user (and, importantly Apple, who wouldn't allow a function if it wasn't a good experience) is asking too much, I would suggest.
