Advertisement Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Hi Jerry_R, Take a look here M9 FW v1.116 available.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DerekF Posted March 18, 2010 Share #262 Posted March 18, 2010 I was advised by Leica USA to reapply the latest firmware update to see if that might resolve the auto power-off and the "off-but-not-quite-off" camera symptoms discussed earlier in this thread, but can someone tell me how to do this? (For background, I've already updated to 1.116 but Leica advised me to try the upgrade again.) I emailed Leica USA for instructions yesterday but still have not heard back from them. ho_co Posted March 18, 2010 Share #263 Posted March 18, 2010 Sometimes photography has a lot to do with what you want to see and where you want to look. Diane Arbus' Plato quote again. Too often more honored in the breach than the observance. You're right. I don't think I've experienced the effect with my M8, but there have been times with the WATE where I've blamed myself for not matching camera and lens settings accurately and turned up with red edges. I still think it's my error, but you've reminded me not to jump to conclusions. Thanks!

Derek-- Just do exactly the same thing you did before: Reinsert the card with the update, turn the camera, wait three seconds or whatever, and follow instructions. DerekF Posted March 18, 2010 Share #266 Posted March 18, 2010 Derek--Just do exactly the same thing you did before: Reinsert the card with the update, turn the camera, wait three seconds or whatever, and follow instructions. Weird, that's exactly what I did yesterday and it didn't work, but upon trying it now, it's updating again. Unfortunately, the reinstall didn't help either issue I'm having. BTW, to anyone else who is able to get the rear LED to light up when pressing the shutter button with the camera switched off, I'm beginning to suspect it's a hardware problem and that the camera doesn't actually turn off. I removed the base plate with the camera off and accidentally pushed the shutter button, and the warning about the base plate being off was displayed very briefly on the LCD screen (which it should not). 35mmSummicron Posted March 18, 2010 Share #267 Posted March 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) my M9 does both the LED camera off, and sometimes baseplate message when camera is off, both previous fw1.002 and fw1.116. I have my camera set to auto off 5min, other than that I'm not sure if I'm noticing substancial power drain... My M9 seems to behave like yours. Nevertheless, the battery charge seems to hold pretty well. Weird. It will be interesting to see what verdict Leica will come up with. Thanks, K-H. chris_tribble Posted March 18, 2010 Share #274 Posted March 18, 2010 None of these problems with either of my M9s. Oddly enough, they persist in working. They even let me go out and earn good money, dovetailing perfectly with my 5D2 + long lenses. Evidence at: Should I complain to Leica? ... Before I get flamed, I just want to flag that I posted this as there seems to be a huge amount of negative comment around, whereas my experience (and I think this goes for a lot of other users) of actually working with the M9 is pretty damn good. Guest RAC23 Posted March 18, 2010 Share #276 Posted March 18, 2010 I think what might be needed here is a completely new download of the firmware. Perhaps the download was corrupted on transfer, or when you removed it's card from your card reader. Make certain you remove the card from the card reader correctly or the download can be corrupted. It's happened to me several times with Canon downloads.

Nice to see a balancing comment in this thread. I am brand-new to Leica and the M Series, after decades with Hasselblad, but learning to love taking great quality images with a portable camera (which, according to the biography by Walther Benser, was their stated objective since the 1920s). So far, after a few hundred shots into MY "Life with the Leica", I find the M9 and lenses to be excellent. The M9 performs exactly as advertised with my 21, 35 and 75 lenses. The firmware update worked well and made some things better. Those that grumble about it being late in coming would have grumbled even louder if it had been released untested and buggy. I have not taken photos of blank walls or snow (we don't get much snow in Singapore), but, in all the shots, indoor and outdoor, that I have taken with any of my lenses, I can not see any red shift in the corners. Maybe I'm too busy looking at the excellent sharp images of people, temples, buildings, etc. In a way, I guess that, with a company like Leica that aspires to perfection, it is good to have some customers who insist on perfection in every minor detail. But, as customers who enjoy using their Leicas we also need to ensure that our public comments are balanced so that we don't inadvertently damage the company by appearing to be too derogatory over a couple of relatively minor issues. Peter - I can hear people pumping up the pressure in their flame throwers as I write - but I think your comment is both sensible and timely.

Chris, I'm not sure if this was partially or directly directed at me, but I never said I had a problem working with the M9, which has been great so far. However, as is often the case in life, the devil's in the details and Leica are a company that strikes me as one that takes pride in the details. Anyway, I would argue that a camera that doesn't actually turn off when it's supposed to be off is more than just a detail. Regardless, I'm not saying the camera sucks, but it would be great to have all of its features work considering there aren't that many to begin with.
