sanyasi Posted March 11, 2010 Share #21 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would suggest ordering the camera without regard to the firmware update. I haven't gone through the process yet, but updating the firmware looks to be pretty easy. If I recall--and follow their instructions, not my recollection--you download the update to a blank SD card, put it in the camera, and somehow that triggers the update. Maybe you have to push a button. Â Given all the angst over getting the camera, I'd get the camera in hand rather than creating an artificial and needless delay, but do as you wish. Advertisement Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Hi sanyasi, Take a look here Good news! M9 FW Update this week! (Merged). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andalus Posted March 11, 2010 Share #22 Â Posted March 11, 2010 YOU are likely right not to wait for the update. I have not owned a digi camera and so I have a steep learning curve ahead, which is why I wanted to have the updated firmware in the camera when I lauched forth on this odyssey of figuring all this out. To date I have just shot slides and then printed to Cibachromes, but even here in N Carolina trusty labs have given up printing Cibachrome. Can't find anyplace nearby who will do that now. One reason I am going to digital, aside from the probs of cleaning dust off scanned slides in CS4!
digitalfx Posted March 11, 2010 Share #23 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Updating the firmware yourself is very simple...its a 5 minute process. I wouldn't wait, as the new firmware will have zero affect on your learning curve. The camera works just fine as-is, and the firmware is just going to make minor improvements. swamiji Posted March 11, 2010 Share #24 Â Posted March 11, 2010 You download the update to a blank SD card, put it in the camera, and somehow that triggers the update. Â Â This is pretty close to the procedure, I followed on the M8 several times and the D-Lux 4 as well. Just remember to have a full battery. Â If you wait for Leica to pre-install the firmware, expect to wait months, and by then another update may be available. It's easy to do...

Honestly, if you feel you can't update a camera's firmware you may want to rethink a foray into digital. I'm serious.  Also, considering how backordered the M9 is you may want to have placed your order months ago. Good luck.
doug_m Posted March 11, 2010 Share #26 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Updating firmware should not deter you at all. Its usually pretty simple. And there will almost certainly be more than one M9 upgrade in the future. Â You might want to keep your MP. I sold mine and often regret it.
ho_co Posted March 11, 2010 Share #27 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) K-H-- Depending on how much time you spend on the forum, you'll probably hear about it first here. Â I say that because in my case, someone else always get the Leica email before I do and posts the news here. Than a couple hours after I get the update, I get the email. Â Andreas always sends an email when the update is posted. But it doesn't do any harm to keep checking Leica's downloads to see if a new one is up. adan Posted March 11, 2010 Share #28  Posted March 11, 2010 As to where:  It will show up on this page of the Leica home site: Leica Camera AG - Downloads  Down near the bottom where it currently (3/10/10 or 10/3/10, 5:48 am Solms time) says "M9 Firmware update 1.002" - it will read some larger number than 1.002. adan Posted March 11, 2010 Share #29 Â Posted March 11, 2010 "If you wait for Leica to pre-install the firmware, expect to wait months...." Â A bit of an exaggeration - I expect the new firmware will become the default factory load almost immediately and show up in shipments within a week. It's not like Leica has a huge warehouse full of unsold M9s already loaded with the current FW sitting around. Â However, you may wind up waiting for months if you delay your ORDER until the firmware is announced, just due to the backlog and waiting lists. Â Yes, updating firmware is fairly easy. I understand how it can seem intimidating the first time ("I'm about to perform a lobotomy on my $7000 camera!!") - but it's also true that realistically it is a very minor challenge in the learning curve of digital photography. Guest ccmsosse Posted March 11, 2010 Share #30 Â Posted March 11, 2010 "Yes, updating firmware is fairly easy ... realistically it is a very minor challenge in the learning curve of digital photography. Â I agree with all the comments - get/order the M9 now and update as updates are released. I have not yet updated a Leica, but the Olympus E500, E520, EP-1 and Lumix GF1 all needed updates and these always ran smoothly. If you own a computer (and surely you do) then you don't second guess constant "firmware" updates for a PC or MAC either. In a way a firmware update is like an early Christmas present ... I can't wait to see what I may get... ha ha. Regarding the MP, I wish I had one ... then again, digital is so instant, that I may have a hard time going back to film. R9user Posted March 11, 2010 Share #31 Â Posted March 11, 2010 You can go ahead and order your M9. Updating firmware is really easy! Download the instructions here <http://us.leica-camera.com/service/downloads/rangefinder_cameras/m8/index.html> and see how easy it is! I updated firmware for my M8 as well as my first R9 DMR (twice - v1.2 &1.3) and again for my latest DMR (v1.3)- takes a minuets or two. the only pre-requisite is a card reader connected to your computer to write the files and a internet connection to download them. Â Make sure your camera battery is fully charged before starting. Â Enjoy

Guest trond Posted March 11, 2010 Share #34  Posted March 11, 2010 We will see!  Why does this info appear on LeicaRumors first, and not on Leica's own web!?  Also I am disappointed to read that my newly acquired Tri-Elmar 16-18-21 and Summilux 21mm, will continue to show the ugly color cast on the sides of the image.  Best regards  Trond
andybarton Posted March 11, 2010 Share #35 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Because it's a rumour... Companies don't post rumours on their own websites, they post firmware. Â If that's a leak of a letter to dealers, then it's a leak. And companies don't post leaks on their websites either. Â I have merged this thread with the one that first broke the rumour three days ago, so that there is one place to discuss it.
scott kirkpatrick Posted March 11, 2010 Share #36  Posted March 11, 2010 If this is valid, the bugfix and performance updates list makes good sense. I am puzzled that the list of recommended cards includes the 2Gb and 32GB Ultra II's but nothing in between? It's very spotty. The list of lenses for which new profiles are reported matches the ones for which I have seen red edges and corners. I don't have a WATE, but do have a 21 summilux, and it is extremely retrofocus, not a prime candidate for red edges, which I have not encountered even in warm light.  scott  Edit: my mistake. The Ultra Class 4 16 GB is mentioned, but it is out of sequence. I have two of them (they are relatively cheap, and necessary for uncompressed DNG shooting) and they work fine for me already.
