Advertisement Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Good news! M9 FW Update this week! (Merged). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted March 11, 2010 Share #42 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Not necessarily. It might be uploaded over the weekend. Â 03/15 is on a monday. A monday is neither the friday of the week before nor the weekend before monday. Â May be the upload for a software-download lasts a whole weekend; so perhaps they have to make a firmware to speed up the upload. Â (Sorry for this, but all those discussion about when something will happen seem very funny to me.)
andybarton Posted March 11, 2010 Share #43  Posted March 11, 2010 The rumour says that the file will be available "by" 15/03. Which means "before".  It could be a mis-translation from the German  To be honest, it really doesn't make much difference either way. "Dancing on the head of a pin" comes to mind. ho_co Posted March 11, 2010 Share #44 Â Posted March 11, 2010 The rumour says that the file will be available "by" 15/03. Which means "before".... Â Actually, it says "expected to be available by...," which means that the rumor has left itself some wiggle-room. Â Â Â (Sorry for this, but all those discussion about when something will happen seem very funny to me.) Agreed! At least it keeps us from having to go out and take pictures. mjh Posted March 11, 2010 Share #45  Posted March 11, 2010 Assuming for the moment there is any truth to this rumor, I would expect the firmware update to become available on Monday – or maybe later if some issue should be found that requires the update to be pulled. If a new version of the firmware is released, the final candidate will typically be a couple of weeks old so there was time for comprehensive tests. Unless there are some nasty last-minute surprises, the final candidate will be promoted to release version and the update will go live on some predetermined date such as 3/15/2010. wlaidlaw Posted March 11, 2010 Share #46  Posted March 11, 2010 Dear Scott, I have tested three different 21 Luxes and two different Tri-Elmars om my M9.  The three 21 Luxes shows very slight, barely visible, color cast in scenes with snow.  The WATE shows clear to strong color cast.  Best regards  Trond  I would say that my WATE does not have strong colour cast but it certainly is noticeable, if the image has pale edges. If this leaked letter is correct, it would be more than a little disappointing that there is no improvement for the WATE.  Wilson

If this leaked letter is correct, it would be more than a little disappointing that there is no improvement for the WATE. I suppose that the new firmware will solve the red corner issues for those lenses where the issue is known to exist and where they actually have a solution. There may be lenses where some improvement would certainly be desirable, but not yet possible, at least not in a completely general way. We will have to wait and see. mjh Posted March 11, 2010 Share #49 Â Posted March 11, 2010 and no high iso improvement??? We are all looking at the same text, so if you cannot find any mention of high ISO improvements, neither can I. Or rather no improvements other than the purported changes in vignetting correction that would create less noise in the corners, though at the expense of more vignetting. UliWer Posted March 11, 2010 Share #50 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Leica has a long tradition of improving high-ISO performance by firmware: after each new firmware for the M8 there have been postings in this forum that it was better than before; the same is true for the shutter sound. Â Firmware is something to believe in.
ppolla Posted March 11, 2010 Share #51 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Let's not forget that there are many other things that the firmware will improve that Leica will never put on paper....

charlesphoto99 Posted March 11, 2010 Share #53 Â Posted March 11, 2010 Leica has a long tradition of improving high-ISO performance by firmware: after each new firmware for the M8 there have been postings in this forum that it was better than before; the same is true for the shutter sound. Â Firmware is something to believe in. Â I think that was always a matter of people who regarded the high iso's not worthy of using them suddenly testing them after FW updates and realizing they aren't that bad. No change in the FW, just the users impression. Â Not sure what's wrong with higher iso on M9. I prefer they leave as is and not introduce software corrections. Plenty of after the fact for that. Once again, remember this is CCD sensor with no filter so already pushing the limits.
adan Posted March 11, 2010 Share #54 Â Posted March 11, 2010 The rumour says that the file will be available "by" 15/03. Which means "before". Â Well, as a long-time deadline-facing journalist - "by" March 15 to me means "before 23:59 (11:59 p.m. for us Yanks) on March 15. Probably well before, but perhaps not. Â It also would never occur to me that someone at Leica would NOT work through or on the weekend (if needed) and upload something at 11:59 pm Sunday, March 14 (or 4 am March 15 or whenever). The internet is 24/7. Â I note Leica (purportedly) only lists current wide lenses as having improved corrections for red edges. I wonder what that means for my pre-ASPH 21 Elmarit. mjh Posted March 11, 2010 Share #55 Â Posted March 11, 2010 I admire blind faith - especially if it is not supported by fact... Facts are just a distraction planted to test your faith. Â The undocumented-firmware-improvements-myth thrives on the lack of evidence: if Leica keeps mum about this, they must be hiding something. Similar stories are peddled about firmware updates from other vendors.

Jamie Roberts Posted March 11, 2010 Share #58 Â Posted March 11, 2010 The noise improvement on the firmware update of the DMR was announced by Leica. Â Jaap--the M8's noise level certainly appears improved at higher ISOs compared with the first release in 2006. I do have the prints to prove it; I don't remember Leica mentioning it, though. I don't know whether that's the result of the hardware change (remember that?) or due to subtle firmware changes. Â On the other hand, and maybe more importantly, RAW processing software and noise handling has also changed a lot in 3 years; so much so that to some extent it doesn't matter if Leica brings better noise reduction or not. Certainly C1 is much improved in noise handling from v3 to v5; I assume it's the same for LR and the other converters. Â Still, it would be nice to see Leica give M9 (and M8) users an updated firmware. Noise levels aren't really a big concern to me anymore.
sanyasi Posted March 11, 2010 Share #59 Â Posted March 11, 2010 I assume it's the same for LR and the other converters. Â /QUOTE] Â I was reading about Lightroom 3 on the Adobe site several days ago. They indicate that version 3 will have top-of-the-line noise reduction features. The implication was that third-party NR programs will not be necessary. Whether that will prove true or not, I don't know, but Adobe appears to be making big strides in the NR area.

I have tried two different WATEs and two different 21 'luxes and none of them have ever shown any red edge. The only Leica lens that I have been able to get to consistently show this is my 21mm Elmarit ASPH.  Jeff
