New M9 with marks in the gray paint

I picked up a brand new M9 yesterday and found two tiny marks/blemishes in its steel gray paint. I know it sounds ridiculous and the camera will get more blemishes from use, but somehow it irritates me with a USD 7000 item (have 2 black M8 and they came with perfect finish). What would you do, go shooting and forgetting about it, or...?

If you send it in for engraving they will replace the top plate with the new engraved one. At least they did on mine, so I figured they don't take off a used top plate, engrave it and reinstall it. They take a new one, engrave it and put that one instead.

It's a 172 Euro operation or there about.

But apart from that it's annoying, yes.

It would irritate me, even knowing I would be marking it far more extensively in the time to come. Seeing the scarcity of M9s, I would get the factory to exchange it - they manage quite a good turnaround in Solms nowadays.

Thank you all, am surprised about the consensus, was concerned I would be to picky.I'll bring it to the dealer today and hope to get either the cover or whole camera replaced asap.

Besides FF there is so much refinement about the M9 when comparing it to the M8, Leica really did a remarkable job with evolutionary improvements, but I'm preaching to the choir.......:)

Which improvements do you mean, I wonder?

Removal of the at-a-glance battery/frame count LCD? Removal of the sapphire glass? No more silver chrome finish? Perhaps you're thinking of the desperately slow card formatting and image display and zoom or maybe it's the unwanted red in wide-angle images which really makes it for you...

I agree with you about the better refinement in the M9 compared to the (earliest) M8 but most of that improvement came in the later part of the M8/M8.2's life. The M9 was rushed to market and it shows.

As for your paint flaws, of course, take the camera back.

NO!

They don't need to remove the top plate, they engrave the camera without removing it. The guy who engraved my camera called me because my signature has a very thin line which makes engraving difficult, so he asked me if that line was very important or not.

We talked for a while and I asked him how the engraving was done. Among other things, he said engraving is done with the top plate on.

Cheers

The first grey cameras had a fragil coating. They could get scratched easily just with the finger nails on normal use -and normal nails! (I've seen someone really angry in September complaining at his dealer...). Apparently, Leica has changed the coating for a more resistent one. You may have an older camera.

Bit grumpy today, Mark? One could mention the thickening of the IR filter, the larger sensor, the ISO menu the soft release mode, etc. as well.

Thanks Jaap for answering this one. And since I never used a 8.2, the shutter of the M9 is definitely improved as compared to the classic M8, no need to code every lens, info screen (yes, I like it), etc

Funny enough I started 2 threads literally at the same time. One with a "M9 issue" (negative thread) and another one with a question about which wide angle lenses on the M9 (positive thread).

The first one got 10 responses and 118 visits within a short period of time, the second one exactly 2 responses and 79 visits. I leave the interpretation to the psychologists, but it is an interesting Monday morning observation.

Perhaps it's because there are just so many 'which lens' threads? And there has been lots of discussion about the Zeiss vs. Leica 18mm lenses. Just a thought, though I'm not saying there isn't a natural attraction to negativity around here...

Back on topic, personally, I'd keep the camera and just suck it up. I agree it shouldn't be an issue with an expensive camera, but really I'd be more worried if it works, has a vertical line problem, etc.

But then again...I don't worry too much about camera cosmetics. If you use it properly, it's going to look like this in a few months anyway:D

This camera is definitively very funny.

Does anyone has a similar image of a weared-out silver camera?

I don't like the paint finish. The black paint of some MP models is beautiful (lacquered), but the matte black paint finish looks very similar to the black chrome of the original M8, and I prefer the chrome finish. My favorite is silver chrome. I would like to see this option for the M9.2.

Going back to the original question, I wouldn't bother asking for a replacement. The marks are annoying but I value my time enough that even a single trip to my dealer for such a purpose seems like a colossal waste of such a valuable commodity.

I wonder if those not interested in cosmetics would feel the same way about a new and very expensive car. Suppose it was mechanically perfect, but scratched noticeably in several places. Just ignore?

For me, there's a difference between cosmetic damage I do and damage the factory or dealer does before I have a chance...regardless of mechanics.

But it's not a car and the scratches are hardly noticeable. As I stated earlier, it all comes down to how much it bothers you and how much you value your time.
