Changed Coating?

I have just received a spare baseplate for my M9. It is from the latest batch, as I had to wait a few days for it to come in. Strangely enough the finish seems to differ a bit from my first run M9, it is a bit more matte and a bit less intensely black. More like black chrome in fact. I wonder whether Leica has changed the coating.

When my M9 arrived I did think it was more matte than the first one I saw so maybe they have changed the paint formula. I'm happy to say that this version of black paint does seem very hard wearing. My M9 has not been mollycoddled this winter and there is no brassing on even the sharpest edge or high wear area.

No- it is an M9 one.

Just what is the difference from the M8/.2 to the M9 bottom plate?

To my knowledge absolutely nothing other then the finish. So any M8/.2 or M9 bottom plate will work on any M8/.2 or M9 camera. So how do you know is it a M9 bottom plate.

Then there is the question,. Why did you need another bottom plate?

That is correct, plus Jaap is also correct. I am using on my M9 my baseplate with grip, that I used on my M8 in M8-times.

I cannot find baseplate numbers however but this list of handgrip numbers on this page

Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA HANDGRIP M for M8 and M9

proves both points for the handgrip:

Name: Model: Order number:

LEICA HANDGRIP M8 black 14471

LEICA HANDGRIP M8 silver 14472

LEICA HANDGRIP M8.2 & M9 black paint 14486

LEICA HANDGRIP M8.2 silver 14487

LEICA HAND GRIP M9 steel-grey paint 14490

Although I understand there are differences between M8.2 black paint and M9 black paint, Leica evidently stopped at the handgrip. Maybe at the baseplate as well.

Ed,

I don't want to answer for Jaap. I also have a spare bottom plate for my two M8 with my tripod shoe attached ot it. It's very convenient when you use a tripod.

As M8/M8.2 bottom plates has three different references (two for black and another one for chrome), I suppose it's the same thing with M9 and they're different from the M8 references because finish is not the same ;)

That is right. All bottom plates have a sticker with the camera type on. In bad weather I use the everready case. It is very practical to use a spare bottom plate to put the camera in. I did use an M8 plate before, but my M8 started complaining of a cold bum...;)

The UK Leica rep told me that part of the early delay in grey deliveries was due to initial feedback on the first grey models having too soft and vulnerable a coating and Leica coming up with an improvement. Certainly mine (delivered end of October) seems to be standing up well. Maybe they have also changed the formulation of the black coating to something similarly hard wearing.

Manuel,

I am using my chrome M8 plate with grip on my grey M9. You really don't notice unless you look very closely. Both my non-grip plates have Manfrotto 200PL plates on them.

Hi Wilson

I was told that as well. My Grey M9 (recent) seems to be standing up to the action pretty well too.
